Why we live in Tacoma - the Lewis & Clark ( 8. June 2005, 19:24 by Derek Young) ~

I called the Lewis & Clark home for five years and it is apartments like this that kept us in Tacoma. How could we leave? We finally did, but it took a very long time to find a home that could replace our unit 8.

Architects Darmer & Cutting first envisioned a single building on the corner of 3rd and Yakima. The exterior featured clinker brick on the second and third floors and timber with plaster on the fourth. Demand for the eight 1600+ square foot units was so great that a second identical building was built right next door. Now, more than ninety years later, the exterior of the two buildings is still true to its original form and the look reveals a grand sophistication not always seen in the other all brick buildings in the neighborhood. A rarity among buildings of this age and size, the units have never been divided and many of the units have maintained their original built-in cabinetry, ‘disappearing beds,’ and windows.

This building represents the quintessential Classic Apartment in Tacoma.
