I voted! It will be interesting to see how it turns out. If bloggers want a to see if they make a difference, here’s a chance at it.
Here’s the direct voting link for Pacific Plaza.
It’s interesting (disappointing?) to note that bloggers seem more interested in voting for the name of said Plaza, rather than volunteering at said Plaza for Showcase Tacoma this weekend.
A shout-out for volunteering at this new, annual community event was posted on this website 3 times and received a very poor response from the blogging community. Too bad.

Interesting. However, I think the two might be connected. People typically volunteer at events they feel connected with.
There may still need to be some “bonding” required between Tacomans and Pacific Plaza.

Are you really saying this in all seriousness?
C’mon, we’re talking downtown, arts, freaking Chihuly here!
Somehow I don’t think that lack of volunteers has a lot to do with people’s excitement about the plaza. It has more to do with inability or unwillingness to volunteer.
I’m guilty, too, of not volunteering to help out at the event, but let’s call a spade a spade.

I agree. Thanks, Jamie. You always seem to write what I’m thinking, only better!

To be fair- it is summer (even though it doesn’t look like it today) and getting people involved with ANYTHING is a challenge. There is just too much going on, besides people being away on vacations and enjoying the Great NW.
The attendance for the recent Streetcar and Tacoma Works meetings have been very small. Enthusiastic- but small. My wife will be volunteering at the McKinley Streetfair, so Georgie and I will be making the rounds of all the events going on- if he gets over his cold.
But to get back on topic:
I like the idea of pulling names for places based on site history.
For instance, according to the Tacoma Public Library’s buildings database (which I’m sure everyone reading this knows intimately)- this specific part of Pacific Ave has gone through more than one renewal. It is a true shame that our City allowed the buildings that once stood there to be torn down – especially looking today at has replaced them.
The Fife Block / Flatiron Block, 1524-46 PACIFIC AVE was once the site of an Indian lodge and also “probably the first building occupied by white men in Tacoma”
The Williams & Co. Bldg, 1518 PACIFIC AVE where Black entertainers were first hired to work on lower Pacific Ave. – breaking Tacoma’s entertainment color line.
Grand Hotel, 1514-16 PACIFIC AVE – mention of Grand Cafe opened by Japanese pioneer Kyuhachi Nishii. Bimbo’s Restaurant with roots to 1920’s. Whatever happend to their “Secret Recipe?”
I also like the idea of humor & whimsy in everyday life:
Anyone for Bimbo’s Plaza?

I know this is completely off topic, but if anyone does know what happened to the Bimbo’s recipe ( I heard rumors of it being sold)I would love to find out and I have a grandma who I think might kill for it

The last I read, Pacific Grill was going to do a “lease to purchase” option on the recipes. Something like- “for every Bimbo’s dish ordered, we will donate .50 to the City of Tacoma” – or something like that. I didn’t see it on their menu the last time I was in though…
