Floatplane Parking - Coming Soon to Tacoma

As early as next month you could start seeing float planes taking off and landing along Tacoma’s Waterfront. The project has been in the works for at least three years now is nearing reality.

According to The News Tribune a seaplane float will be appearing near the mouth of the Thea Foss, thanks to the Tacoma Waterfront Association and the Foss Waterway Development Authority. The float, which will be added to an existing dock near Thea’s Park, will be only the second in Pierce County; the first is at American Lake.

According to the Tacoma Waterfront Association, the project was made possible, in part, by a $30,000 WSDOT Aviation grant for planning and environmental issues, along with matching funds from Kenmore Air, U.S. Oil, and others. Marine Floats Corp will donate and modify an existing float to accomodate the flying watercraft (or is that floating aircraft?), with funding for modifications from the FWDA and other donors. The planned float will initially be free for commercial and private use, but that could change with demand.

Your next trip to Victoria or the San Juans could be just a bit more scenic…
