What are Tacoma's icons?

I've been thinking about this a lot lately: What are Tacoma's icons? Seattle has the Space Needle, San Francisco has the cable cars, the Golden Gate,  and that pyramid office building.

If you were to make a souvenir spoon for tourists visiting Tacoma, what would be on it?

Here are some old school examples:

Can you imagine our modern day County Courthouse being featured?!

Mt. Rainier (but it used to be Mt. Tacoma!)

My old high school, Stadium (used to be called Tacoma High School):

St. Peters church down in Old Town:

The bridges or the dome with the mountain backdrop.

Re: What are Tacoma's icons?

Top-of-the-Ocean (oops)
Bob's Java Jive
Old City Hall
Wright Park Conservatory
Asarco Smelter & Stack (oops)
The view from Owens Beach up-bay to the tideflats and the Mountain ... especially with the ferry in the foreground
Murray Morgan Bridge (& Mountain)
New waterway bridge ... does it even have a name yet?

Of all those, I'd take the view of the Mountain from out by Owens Beach, but not sure it'd fit on a souvenir spoon. Maybe on a mug.

Re: What are Tacoma's icons?

Although it's not my favorite, I would say the MOG (and International Center for Contemporary Art) great big shiny cone.  Or Union Station.

Re: What are Tacoma's icons?

Well, they're not spoons, but for about 12 years now I've purchased, I guess you would call them Christmas ornaments, with Tacoma icons on them from Tacoma Trains in Proctor.  They're etched brass, usually in multiple pieces that give some of them a 3-D like quality, hung from a looped string.

The ones that I have purchased, and the others I believe are there, include:
-Union Station
-11'th St (Murray Morgan) Bridge
-One Pacific (the old Northern Pacific R.R. Headquarters) building.
-Old City Hall
(I'm not sure, I believe the Bridge, One Pacific and Old City Hall have      their own but, I remember one of those incorporating the other two      as well.)
- Lincoln and Stadium High, for sure, I believe Mt. Tahoma is there as       well.
- The Narrows Bridge
- Museum Of Glass

There are others, some which are no longer sold, but I can't remember the rest.

Old City Hall and Union Station work pretty well.

Re: What are Tacoma's icons?

I'm partial to the Museum of Glass hot shop cone.  And the dome.  Definitely the Tacoma Dome.

I agree.   And many of them need some fixing and enhancement.  Tacoma has let many of its icons fall in disrepair.

Narrows Bridge

Needs lighting.

Old City Hall

Needs to be refurbuished and the Clock Tower needs to be fixed ASAP.  Its hard to convince anyone that Tacoma is in good shape with out city clocktower is broken.

Winthrop Hotel

Our central historical hotel is still in shambles.  This would be one of the top icons if it were fixed.

Re: What are Tacoma's icons?

If I was going to make a souvenir spoon it would be a scratch 'n sniff spoon.  View of the bay with Rainier and the Dome, but scratch to get that true Tacoma memory

Re: What are Tacoma's icons?

Great suggestions all!

Here are some other parameters:

A good city icon should be:
- An icon, not iconic.
- Easily recognizable in silhouette.
- Publicly owned.

Re: What are Tacoma's icons?

Tacoma's Southern Kitchen Restaurant is getting an exterior makeover. Manager John Waller called the work a "fresh look, more better for visibility with down-home Southern-style ambiance."

Rod Ladd, whose family owns the building that houses the 4-decade-old Sixth Avenue icon, said crews started stripping the stucco facade Saturday. He said workers will install vinyl siding, painted red. Also coming are insulated glass windows, a picket fence and flower pots. Look for new and improved signage, too.

Southern Kitchen's interior was repainted and spiffed up last year.

In other South Sound soul food news, Uncle Thurm said he plans to bust down some walls. He hopes to expand into the space next to his restaurant. Stay tuned.
