2011 Urban Studies Forum: The Urban University

The University of Washington Tacoma will be proudly hosting the 2011 Urban Studies Forum on The Urban University. This event, which features Wim Wiewel, President of Portland State University, as its keynote speaker and many others on panels through the day will be held on Thursday, February 3, 2011, from 7:30am to 3:30pm.

All events will be open to the public.

The goal of this forum will be to analyze the impact and functions of urban universities to the communities they serve and inhabit – items of significant importance to Tacoma.

Clearly, UWT has dramatically changed the landscape and future of downtown Tacoma. In what ways does this unique institution reflect the nature of the city of Tacoma?  What does the city’s vision for the future mean to the university?  What is the university’s responsibility to the city? What is the city’s responsibility to the university?

It should be a great conversation. We’ll see you there.

I’d like to second what Erik said above.

I’d also like to suggest that the UWT start planning it’s next few building projects near the borders of the campus so the footprint of the campus can be less blighted.

I know when I went to WSU, freshmen had to live in campus housing. Could that eventually be a rule here? Perhaps a giant dorm complex on the super block of 21st and Market could be the spot for a huge dorm complex similar to Stephenson Hall at WSU – a three tower complex with the bottom 2 or 3 floors used as usual storefronts, campus mess hall, and etc.???? Is a dorm hall in the Stephenson model a money maker for a University?
