2nd Annual Zeit-Bike - Call to Artists

The City of Tacoma has announced the second annual Zeit-Bike competition at the Tacoma Art Museum. This year’s theme is Surrealist Impulse where artists will employ the aesthetic approaches of Surrealism to render ordinary bicycles into art objects. The finished pieces of art will be on display at the Tacoma Art Museum from May 13 – 16.

Participating artists will also be invited to speak to the public about their work at the Tacoma Art Museum during May’s Artwalk, (the 15th). There will be a public judging of the bikes that night. The top prize will be a $250 Visa gift card, with a $100 second and $50 third prize.

We look forward to it. Maybe, just maybe, we’ll submit something this year…

Artist Guidelines and Rules:

1. Use a bicycle as a base
2. Make a connection to the surrealist theme
3. Be original – be inspirational
4. Maintain some mobility so we can roll the bike from place to place
5. Use materials appropriate for a museum setting – no hazardous material, no live plants, no perishable food, no open flames, etc.
6. Register by March 31, 2008 (individuals or groups)
7. Submit an electronic image of your Zeit-Bike by Monday, April 28 for judging
8. Artists are responsible for delivering their work on Monday, May 12 and picking up their work on Friday, May 16.

Due to limited exhibition space at the Tacoma Art Museum, only the top ten bikes will be displayed May 13-16.  There will be a juried process to determine which 10 bikes excel in meeting the first three guidelines. Zeit-Bike participants will be notified of acceptance by May 2, and all bikes will be shown in digital format at the Tacoma Art Museum on May 15 during Third Thursday Artwalk.

For questions, clarification or to register, please write or call: Diane Wiatr at the City of Tacoma at dwiatr@cityoftacoma.org or (253) 591-5380.

Zeit-Bike: Surrealist Impulse is sponsored by: City of Tacoma, Tacoma Art Museum, Pierce Transit, Pierce County and a CMAQ grant.

Just curious, does anyone know if pictures exist from last year’s contest?
