2nd Cycle Promotes Local Bike Advocacy through Community and Volunteer Service

Originally founded by four friends in May 2008, 2nd Cycle has come a long way from its meager beginnings as it finally became a fully functional bike repair shop this past February.

Even the City of Tacoma has helped to promote 2nd Cycle’s ongoing success by installing a row of bike racks outside on May 25th; near the end of Tacoma’s most recent Bike Month.

As community-focused enterprise, the non-profit organization places an emphasis on cheap prices paired with good quality to maintain a loyal customer demographic.

From its Hilltop hub at 1312 MLK St., 2nd Cycle provides not only tools and repairs, but education for locals, offering classes and events to promote bike advocacy.

Like other successful businesses such as the nationwide coop, REI, 2nd Cycle is able to connect with its customers on a personal level through passion for the same activities.

Although its employee staff is entirely comprised of volunteers, 2nd Cycle also includes its customers in service through its Volunteer Work Nights.

In the past, the Work Nights have included simple tasks such as sweeping, cleaning and setting up bikes for sale but most of all, they connect and empower all members of the biking community through service.

The next Volunteer Work Night is coming up on June 27th, so if you’re interested in helping out, keep an eye on 2nd Cycle’s Facebook page for specific times.

As the shop’s blog page suggests, “2nd Cycle is a community bike project” and thus, its motives are ever-adapting to the demands of its customers while remaining vigilant in its striving to build a wider, all-encompassing biking community.
