3rd Thursday for March 2009 - Tonight

Tonight is Third Thursday, ArtWalk, and a crazy busy evening of campaign kickoffs, concerts, and general good times.  At this point, we see very few reasons for you to be home this evening. Where should we start …

The museums are open.

The Grand Impromptu Gallery is open from 4:00 to 8:00 with guest artist Mary Mann.

Tacoma Art Place is presenting a Tactile Textile Exhibit that features “yummy yarns” from 5:30 to 7:00.

The Helm Gallery is hosting the work of Jeremy Mangan and Micah Tucker starting at 5:00 pm.

Deborah Page will be performing at Sanford and Son.

Gallery Madera is open from 5:00 to 8:00.

There is definitely more. Get outside and check it out.

Finally, the Tacoma Philharmonic is hosting the Canadian Brass tonight. I will admit that there are at least a few Canadian Brass cassettes in my closet somewhere … from my early days of band geekdom and filed next to the Nuclear Whales. It’s been a while since I’ve listened to them, but the memories are flooding back.

The group that put brass on the map. With the unbeatable blend of virtuosic artistry, spontaneity and humor, the Canadian Brass brighten the rosters of theaters and international festivals throughout the world. With repertoire that ranges from Bach to blues, they are widely considered the world’s leading brass ensemble.

If you have a chance, I highly recommend going. Tickets are still available.

Oh, and for some thoughts on the current state of ArtWalk, here’s The News Tribune’s story from last weekend.

Along with taking in the free goodwill and community spirit, please consider purchasing some local art! (I did this week.)

Great show at the Helm this month, but the perpetual talk of the gallery’s closing continues — they should do an appeal for community memberships to keep it going.

The Tribune article made a point about ArtWalk being to dispersed to actually ‘walk’.

One thing they didn’t consider in their analysis was using the Link to get between different locations. Perhaps ST could double service from the current 15 minute interval during those evenings?

In any case, I’m looking forward to the right combination of mood and weather to check it out sometime this season. Please keep the special event days and exhibit reminders coming.
