72 Hour Film Competition Showcase - Tonight
Somehow time flew by so fast we nearly missed this one … The Grand Cinema is once again hosting the 72 Hour Film Competition Showcase tonight at the Rialto theater. What is it? It’s a a festival of short films produced by local crews in a very short period of time. Filmmakers had 72 hours to write, shoot, and edit one 5-minute film. Thirty teams submitted films that had to include:
Sitaution: A Misunderstanding
Prop: A Container
Action: Washing
Line of Dialogue: “They don’t make’em like they use to.”
Tonight we get to see all the entries. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. and the films will begin at 7:00 p.m. The last time we checked, tickets were still available for $12 general admission or $10 for Grand Cinema members. You can purchase tickets by stopping by the Grand Cinema.

And here’s the winner for Best Use of Dialogue – brought to you by the same folks that produced South 5.

If there are any other films from the festival on the Internets, send them our way and we’ll post them here.

I don’t understand why nobody seems to notice how the guy that MAKES THE DVD FOR THE FESTIVAL has won an award (or two) for the last four years! And his stuff is obviously made months in advance using the highest tech equipment with the festival requirements awkwardly put in via cutaways. I can understand rewarding the guy that makes the DVDs but uh… they make employees enter things out of competition, why not him?
Also, this Terese Cuff lady has won an award every four years thus far. This is just straight up baffling for reasons I can’t go into here without sounding mean. Last night they INVENTED AN AWARD to give to her. Why do they expect people to keep paying good money year after year if they’re just going to reward their friends? Jeeeeeez, grand. Its almost as if these perennial award winners had something to do with Prairie Home Companion.

I don’t understand why there isn’t more of a mention how they’ve given awards FOUR YEARS IN A ROW to the same two entrants. They invented a non-existent award last night, and gave it to one of them!
I don’t think this counts as a personal attack if I don’t mention them by name, but anyone familiar with this festival knows who I’m talking about. People don’t like paying $50 and spending a weekend killing themselves just to watch The Grand give awards to their friends.

“This is a festival of lies!!!”

I don’t know if the video that is featured above won any awards besides “Best Use Of Dialogue”, but it certainly deserved to.
As for all the comments about friends of friends winning all the time: it sounds like “The Grand” has a problem that needs to be fixed. Have they considered outside judges, or limiting wins from the same people?
My son considered entering. By the sounds of things, I’m glad that he didn’t.

Hey Michael B, what’s with all of the footage of downtown Kirkland in your video? We don’t like the Eastside around here…

I think someone should probably mention one of the “perennial winners” mentioned above was given an arts grant by the city of Tacoma a few years ago. The very same organization that sponsors The Grand.
