72 Hour Film Festival - What are you going to do about it?
Each year, Tacoma filmmaking teams set out to create a short film that will stand out from the others. This weekend, they will cross paths throughout the city trying to get each shot to produce the most cohesive film possible. There is a catch to this filmmaking process: the teams only have 72 hours to complete their film, in its entirety, after getting their orders on Thursday.
This weekend marks another year that our city is hosting the 72-hour Film Festival. Each team is provided a list of specific criteria that needs to be included within the film, determined by Philip Cowan, Executive Director for the Grand Cinema. This year’s list of requirements are as follows:
- One of the characters must have a super power
- Line of dialogue: “What are you going to do about it?”
- Prop: an egg
- Location: A dock or a pier
- 5 minute maximum length, including credits
- Films must be turned in to the Grand on Sunday evening at 7pm.
Find out how each of 30 local short films turned out at a viewing party being held at the Rialto on Friday May 6th at 6pm. The evening will conclude with an awards ceremony recognizing the best use of the criteria with six different awards. Tickets are $13 in advance or $15 the day of the viewing party and are available at the Grand Cinema box office or at www.grandcinema.com.

The image of that pale little ghost looking up at us with her big liquid eyes will always haunt me. Tacoma is a terrible place. I’m sorry she had to find that out.
