A Chained Artist's Tacoma Connection

You probably saw the story somewhere.  You had to.  It was one of those sidebar stories on various website.  NPR’s Morning Edition ran a little blurb. CNN’s headline read Chained Artist Forced to Hop It.  The basic story is that Trevor Corneliusien draws pictures inside mine shafts.  On a recent trip in the California high desert things went a little wrong when he discovered, after wrapping the chains around his legs and locking them, that he didn’t have the key.  I would be very curious to know the thoughts going through his head at that moment.  Twelve hours later, after putting his shoes on and shuffling across the desert, he was able to call for help from a Baker, California gas station.

I read the story and didn’t think much more about it until the News Tribune hit my front step this morning and we discovered that Mr. Corneliusien is a UPS grad (class of 2001).  Now the story seems to have that great liberal arts twist.  Did the artist draw on his experiences in Passages to pull himself through?

The last question I had was about the art?  Did he hop with the art?  The WCF Courier had the answer:

“He brought it down with him,” Deputy Ford said. “It was a pretty good depiction of how a chain would look wrapped around your legs.”
