A Conversation About the 253
Once upon a time, Daniel Blue drew the 253 Heart. He put it on t-shirts and jackets. He made stickers. The 253 Heart began to proliferate around the South Sound and you now can’t drive more than a few blocks without seeing one of the iconic stickers in car or shop window. It has become a chapter in our identity. Daniel created Motopony and eventually left Tacoma for new opportunities. The 253 empire passed to Steve Naccarato.
Steve’s “Republic of 253” works with artists to continue the 253 tradition. A conversation that appeared suddenly this week, resulting from a new design by artist Jesse Arneson aka ESP. We’ve seen the 253 begin to depart from the original heart design. But Arneson’s 253 in the shape of a gun has stimulated a broad reaching conversation.

A short pre-order announcement on Facebook led to a blog post by Kevin Freitas on Feedtacoma, more Facebook posts, and will result in a column by Kathleen Merryman in The News Tribune this weekend. The big question everyone seems to be asking: should Steve Naccarato make t-shirts, hoodies, and stickers with the 253 Glock?
The discussion has been interesting to watch. It’s passionate. It’s personal. While there have been some supporters of the design, there are many detractors who do not believe it is the image that Tacoma needs right now. Guns are a part of our past and shouldn’t be displayed as our identity or future some have argued.
It’s a design and statement by an artist about the place in which he lives. Should his view be censored due to community will and a vision for what we can be? Does context matter? If the 253 Glock was matted and framed at the Fulcrum, would you feel differently? Andy Warhol made gun prints and while we may not hang one on our walls or wear a shirt emblazoned with one, they are thought-provoking.
We’ve heard a lot of opinions, with more to come: some would say “if you don’t like the design, don’t buy the shirt.” Yet, when the community has fully embraced its 253 identity, we all have opinions.

I don’t like the gun image at all. America and Tacoma has had a gun violence problem for far too long, and glorifying guns is irresponsible.
I would encourage that it be taken off the market.
R Riley May 18, 2012
Looks more like the NES Zapper.

Art matters. It influences and shapes us. Sometimes we artists forget this. I know I often dismiss my art (written and spoken word) as having little influence only to be shocked when someone quotes some of my own words. A 253 Glock may seem humorous or even quirky at first, but when one attaches names to recipients of the fruit of these metallic plants the laughing ceases.
In a span of 3 months, 2 children in the Pierce County area were killed and one severely wounded because of handguns. Of the 18 homicides that have occurred in South Tacoma over the last 5 years, 16 were gunshots.
Art matters. It influences and shapes us. May the artists of Tacoma hold this trust well.

MY 253 HEART is 253 HEART BROKEN
B Beth May 18, 2012
First, I have to work really hard to see the 253 in that design. All I see is a gun. Second, the business has a right to use the design if they want. But just because they CAN doesn’t mean they SHOULD. If they’re interested in boosting pride of 253 (as the heart does for me), then this image is counter to that. If they’re trying to provoke, then they’re succeeding. I would absolutely never buy anything with that image on it. It doesn’t matter if they’re part of our past, present or future – guns aren’t something to be glorified. It’s a terrible way to represent Tacoma/253 – or any city.
P Peter Peter May 18, 2012
Just overheard in the office, “RR does a really good job of making good points … then crapping all over them.”
E Electric Elliot May 18, 2012
Wait. Is it “guns don’t hurt people, hoodies do”? Can’t seem to remember.
J JJ May 18, 2012
Whoever wears this hoodie will likely live a very short lifetime and die of violence, become severely injured due to violence or end up in the state penitentiary system often. It’s like that saying if you are looking for a fight you will find it.Basically only an idiot/fool would wear this in public around people they are unfamiliar with.
L LadyM May 18, 2012
The 253 heart symbolizes love for the community. The 253 gun sends the opposite message. I’d much rather see this framed in the Fulcrum as a piece of statement art than sported around town as a badge of “glory”.
M Matthias May 18, 2012
No thanks. Living in Hilltop, any gun symbolism is not the direction I want things to take. 253Heart is hopeful, proud and promoting Tacoma. Nothing that 253Glock accomplishes.

It’s totally counter-productive on so many fronts.

It’s very telling that Mr. Naccarato has not ordered any of these shirts…This is nothing more than Shock Jock publicity…let’s get Tacoma whipped up in a frenzy about 253 so we can sell more 253 merchandise…Mr. Naccarato was devestated when his son joined the military…he is not pro guns…he is pro commerce. All he cares about is how much he will profit off this conversation.Shame on you Mr. Naccarato for using the conscience and hearts of tacomans as bank account for your next shiny toy.We are worth more than that. The one thing you has overlooked and underestimated is that tacomans have a long memory and we do not forget. Well, I know everyone on here is probably going to bash me for saying this but … I think the design is really cool. I would definitely sport one of these hoodies for it’s originality. Tacoma’s past is it’s past and gun violence happens all over the country, not just here. Should we censor every picture of a gun then? Maybe I’m just not as sensitive as the rest but when I look at this I just see a cool design that references where I’m from but does not represent it. Besides it really does look more like the NES zapper then a real gun anyway. Actually, it would be even cooler if he designed it to really be the NES zapper haha. I would definitely buy that!
C Catherine Oleson May 18, 2012
It should not be a matter of censorship; but the artist needs to exercise some judgment. Good judgment would say that we have more than enough violence, and more than enough violent symbols, which do inspire those so inclined into the kind of posturing and baiting that lead quickly to violence.
The symbols of violence aren’t cute, aren’t funny, aren’t even new. Put it away.
Ask Trayvon Martin’s parents— they’ll tell you.

T Thorax O'Tool May 19, 2012
The design isn’t easy to read, you REALLY have to look to see the 253.
I’m thinking that people outside of “the loop” are only going to see a gun.
If that is the case, is the negative implication of the gun moot in regards to Tacoma specifically?
S Stay Dum May 19, 2012
The image is dum and unreadable.
But that is up for debate.
What is not debatable is that Mr. Naccarato is a bully, a thug and an in need of help.
Let’s face it, he has daddy’s money to playboy around town, being relevant by buying art from artists when they are literally starving and pimping it out as his love for Tacoma.
I hear he blamed his behavior on “drinking to much”. Then his friends and FAMILY need to encourage him to get into a 12 step program. NOW! What If it had not just been limited to cyber- bullying? What if RR had walked into the PG bar right then? Would have he been beaten? Shot with a 253 Glock?
This is man selling an image of GUN making serious threats!! From the city that brought you the DC Sniper/ Maurice Clemmons/ Josh Powell and many others. It is clear by RRs posted apology that he was fearful, perhaps not just for him self, but his wife and child also. I doubt he slept much that night.
His behavior can not be supported in any way shape or form.
I just took the 253 heart off my car and I will ask all my friends to also. I will NOT set foot in his store again or spend $$ with ANYONE associated with the Naccarato name. Not until I hear he has sought treatment for his problems and has them under control.
Friends, we have all now seen the signs, the signs we so quickly say why didn’t some one do something. Do we step in now or wait a few months and say well I saw the signs, but I too did nothing.
T Thorax O'Tool May 19, 2012
If I recall, it’s just a design and not a product at this point.
The “controversy” certainly has made a lot of free buzz for them.
R Randy Mills May 19, 2012
RIPOFF of Detroit Gun Shirt (google it).
To me, it looks as if the artist simply took the shirt logo which spells “DETROIT” out of a smoking pistol, and changed it to 253.
Coincidence?
C Cloud Writer May 19, 2012
I think the threats to RR Anderson from Steve Naccarato behind this gun design are criminal and it’s not a side issue.
T Tashi May 19, 2012
Wow.
In my Buddhist nun studies we work with understanding when people, including ourselves, are triggered. It is so painful to witness someone (artist at large) deeply challenged by criticism, so much so he’d start threatening RR this way. I sincerely hope he gets his brain back into a gear that isn’t causing harm to others because he feels threatened psychologically.
As for the gun designs, I really am not fond of them. In fact, as a life long resident of Tacoma I’ve seen it go from nothing but drugs and prostitution downtown to the beautiful place it is becoming, and I’m deeply saddened by the use of something that was gaining a community following (253) evolving into a manifestation that will cause people to drop attention. The 253 Heart was something rare in Tacoma, something people from many economic and class groups could all connect with. Really too bad to see it fall apart, but nothing lasts forever : ) so I’m at least grateful for the neat experience of 253 Hearts as a community connection.
C Chalky White May 19, 2012
If nothing else, this illustrates (pun intended for both RR and Naccarato) what can happen when people try too hard to be cool. This thread should be re-named “Exit 134: when you’ve gone too far”.
J Janemckane May 19, 2012
I am not a fan of the gun, but I’m not a fan of the heart either. I may be the only one. I hope this inspires other Tacoma artists to put their unique spin on 253 pride! Lets set off an overwhelming love campaign. Does it have to be either-or? I would go to a gallery to see something like this…
C Colleen Gray May 19, 2012
Dear RR,
I am one of your admirers but have to speak up. Since you like to needle people, you may want to work on your ability to give generous apologies. It is uncool posting that rant until and unless Naccarato followed through. He is unhappy, obviously, and dumb to message you when that angry. But to post it? I did not know you were that mean.
I believe Tacoma is better with the two of you and now you BOTH need to apologize to each other.
As for the gun, I am “meh” about the design. How about some other shapes? A spatula. Tacoma cooks! A steaming dog pile? We got dog poo! Whatever. That said, the passionate dialog this design has sparked is phenomenal. Wow. Now THAT is what art is supposed to do. Nothing I’ve created has ever done that.
C Colleen Gray May 19, 2012
Chalky White. You are my hero.
S Scott Ramsey May 19, 2012
I’m happy to say I know RR and Steve and consider both of them to be decent people who are strong assets in the Tacoma community. It’s my opinion that they have both acted out of anger at some point in this exchange, but I’ve also seen attempts at reconciliation from both as well. I want to encourage everyone to avoid jumping to conclusions about either of these guys and stop fanning the flames of an issue that should have never escalated to this level.
The discussion surrounding the T-shirt design can and should be a healthy one that we all weigh in on, but it’s up to Steve and RR to resolve the rest of this, not the jury of public opinion.
S Sophie May 19, 2012
The conversation has become passionate and invigorating until Steve Naccarato crossed the line. I would never buy from a person who threatens another person because they have a different opinion. Steve is a spoiled little boy who needs to stop bullying people who disagree with him. Good for RR for publishing these threats…Steve said he could and RR called his bluff. If Steve were on City Council ( god forbid) would we allow this behavior? I too will encourage all my friends to never set foot in his store again and I have taken my 253 off my car. He is the last person I want to economicaly support or have my children look up to. Time to move to yelm Mr, Naccarato….
C Chalky White May 19, 2012
Flames aren’t being fanned Scott. RR goes out of his way to attract attention. He desperately seeks it. Naccarato is selling a product. You don’t blog or Facebook your business and your drama if you seek privacy.
W William Hall May 19, 2012
I realize that this conversation has everyone up in “arms”, but from a strictly design perspective the Glock Rocks. (sorry but it does)
S Scott Ramsey May 19, 2012
It’s clear that both Steve and RR have business interest in this and why shouldn’t they? Steve’s never been shy about promoting his line of clothes, etc. with artwork from local artists. RR’s presence in Tacoma is also calculated to generate sales, You don’t have to look far (check his Facebook profile pic) to his business in action. I’ve bought RR’s book and Steve’s shirts and stickers and I will continue to do business with both. There’s nothing there to debate in my opinion.
What got my attention is the level of anger and hatred that has crept into the general discussion surrounding this topic. Sure, Steve made a stupid mistake, but it was between him and RR until it was made public which was RR’s mistake in this. Then all hell broke loose.
I like to brag about being a life-long resident of (and by my estimate, a fourth generation) Tacoman. I live here because I want to, not because I have to. I’m a huge fan of our town and I admire others who have the same drive to promote and protect Tacoma. I honestly believe that both Steve and RR share this same respect for Tacoma. With so many good things happening here in my home town, it breaks my heart when I see the all too common rush to tear someone down just because they’ve had a bit of success. That’s not unique to Tacoma, was but I wish we were immune from it.
Regarding the tone of this thread, if you don’t believe the flames are being fanned, then I encourage you to re-read posts 18, 19, 28, 31, 32 and 38 above.
Thanks for reading this far. I appreciate you allowing me to voice my opinion.
S Stay Dum May 19, 2012
I’m sorry if what you read was seen as fanning the flames. I was serious. This is classic bullying 101. Rich boy and nerdy art student.
The ony thing RR did that was wrong is he didn’t report the very clear threat to his physical safety to police. However, posting it online may have saved him from the business end of a sword. Transparency to reveal the tyrant was his only defense and it later ellicted an apology from Steve that put the blame on something else (drinking).
Having been around domestic violence before, this looks familiar. He needs to take some time and think.
If you are a friend then you will have a serious conversation with Steve about his problem.
If you are an enabler then you will support him and buy him a drink.
If you hang with him cuz he is fun and has $$ then you will defend him and diminish those who call for him to take responsibility for his threats.
We live in a city under which a cloud of violence hangs low and yet we excuse it because no upstanding white man would do such a thing. BS!
P PostSilenceShhh May 19, 2012
To be absolutely clear, the only one at fault in this controversy is Steve. Not RR, not anyone else.
It was Steve who decided to promote a terrible product. It was Steve who threatened RR because of criticism. It was Steve who walked up to Anderson at Chalk Off and threatened to break Anderson’s legs. It is now Steve who is desperately trying to cover his butt instead of manning up and apologizing for his incredibly stupid and vicious behavior.
RR Anderson has nothing to apologize for. Not his original comments, not his attitude, and certainly not his publishing of Steve’s threats.
When someone threatens you with blackmail and then approaches you in public and threatens to break your legs, you don’t keep it private. You expose it for what it is.
Steve didn’t just make a mistake. He crossed every imaginable line into indecency and criminality. All of my 253Heart gear is gone. A full account of Steve’s behavior is on my FB for all of my 2,000 friends to see.
Tacoma has no room for a bully like Steve Naccarato. I know I certainly have no respect for that spoiled jerk.
M Maria May 19, 2012
This is bullying and intimidation—which is only reinforced when principal-types say things like, “Both sides are at fault.”
No, both sides are not at fault here.
A snide comment from a cartoonist doesn’t equal a backdoor threat to damage a person’s reputation. No way, no how. Doesn’t even come close.
RR did say something extreme, comparing gun violence to meth and child porn. Perhaps the way RR said it wasn’t maybe the wisest, and it wasn’t thoughtful perhaps. In reality, those are three issues have caused a great deal of pain and destruction in Pierce County. So suggesting a gun t-shirt should be followed by child porn and meth t-shirts is just a rhetorical way of saying, “Hey, if you’re going to go this far, to glorify violence, are you going to keep going and glorify other destructive issues in our community?”
RR was not in the least bit saying anyone was making or should make child porn.
Misconstrued, perhaps this sounded bad. As a parent, it probably was hurtful to Steve. Also Mr. Anderson’s constant critique of popular culture and Tacoma hipsters probably gets annoying to people sometimes.
Still—still, (still!!) there never ever is any excuse for someone to threaten a person for their opinion. It is never okay to threaten someone with public shame or exposure of their secrets, to force them to do something for you (retract a statement, publicly apologize, whatever).
This is not only morally wrong—to use power and status to scare someone by threatening them—it can also be legally wrong. In Washington State, it’s a felony crime to commit extortion. To threaten someone to exposure as a means of obtaining an action is illegal. Illegal because it is wicked to use power and force to shut down what people say or do, to squelch political protest, or to get what you want through threat of exposure.
Steve is not a bad guy. Many of you have vouched for him, and many of us have met him at galleries or other interactions. He works on behalf of Tacoma in many ways. He made a mistake. We all make mistakes. He probably realizes this now, and hopefully has apologized—and realized how serious it is to threaten someone.
However, as the person above commented, this is a classic bullying scenario. It’s done behind-the-scenes, it’s done forcefully, it’s meant to humiliate and cause fear, it’s done in a way to remind the victim of the power inequality. It’s sickening. It’s sad. It happens all the time, and yet there are plenty of people who want to brush it under the carpet.
I hope with our history—of burning down the Chinese houses, of the wrong done to the Japanese, the racial and economic divides we’ve had to overcome—that this is a city where intimidation is not tolerated. I also hope we can be a city that offers forgiveness and grace to each other. There really is the chance to make things right after mistakes.
My parents were both born under occupation and totalitarian regimes. They came to America because there really wasn’t a place for them in their home countries. I’m especially sensitive to the subject of intimidation. Free speech without fear of violence or harm is very important to me. I feel so very angry and disappointed to hear this happening to one of my favorite artists and cartoonists. The world needs more people like RR speaking freely without looking over their shoulders wondering if harm is coming their way.
Unbelievable.

You have over the years spent way to much time attacking the successful and or rich on the list serve or social media. If I had to use a symbol for Steven Naccarato it would DEFINITELY be the heart and you from the hostility I have seen towards people over the years WOULD BE A Swastika. Should RR be the good little bullying victim, don’t tell anyone and hide at home? Or move away from his attacker?
The only thing RR did wrong is not file a police report for having his life threatened. Steve should be arrested for extortion and making credible threats. Steve said and I quote : “If you want to see who has the bigger sword, then say the word my friend.”
“Lets see who has the bigger friends. eh?”
“… and my associates…”
These are not phrases intended to create a place of calm and sense of brotherhood. They are intended to create fear and intimidate the target into a specific action.
Furthermore, I never indicated the verbal threat was from Steve. It was one of his associates he alluded to. Steve is old skool, rat pack type stuff. I’m sure he will be in a very public place with lots of witnesses buying lots of drinks at the time.
Robert, you should stop attacking me and get you friend some real help. He clearly has anger issues.
