A Day of Service and Celebration

January 19th is the day to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Many folks choose to use this day to give a bit of themselves for the community as a Day of Service, others choose to celebrate his life and his work. A number of opportunities have come across our desk for both service and celebration, so following is a list of some of them. Please add any others you know about in the comments, and consider donating part of your day off to your community and the memory of Dr. King.

Washington State History Museum
Honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the Washington State History Museum, with performances from a variety of artists and FREE admission to the Museum all day. Celebrate Dr. King’s dream with a past-to-present tribute of African American history, from 1:30 – 5 p.m.

Celebrate at the Dome
Celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.‘s dream at the 21st annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. birthday celebration. This tribute has evolved into one of the largest indoor community celebrations of its kind. Doors open at 10 a.m. and the event will take place between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Tacoma Dome Exhibition Hall. Start the day with a complimentary continental breakfast and then enjoy multicultural music and dancing. The key note speaker will be Major General Harold L. “Mitch” Mitchell.

Celebrate With Bates
Bates Technical College will honor the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at a free celebration on Friday, January 16, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., at Bates’ downtown campus auditorium, 1101 S. Yakima Avenue. This event, features a keynote address by Eric Davis, an adjunct faculty member at Pierce College and Shoreline Community College where he teaches courses on “Black Thought and Culture” and “Multicultural Studies.”

Giving Garden at UWT
UW Tacoma’s Giving Garden Groundbreaking Event is the construction of four raised bed gardens, which will grow fresh veggies to be harvested and donated to Tacoma’s Good Neighbor Cafe, a facility providing breakfast and dinner to homeless and low-income individuals. Snacks and beverages provided for volunteers, 10:30 am – 12:30 pm. For more information click here.
