A Few Notes For Your Weekend, and Beyond

Letter Carrier Food Drive

This Saturday, May 11, is the annual Letter Carriers’ Food Drive. It’s got to be the easiest way to do good for those in need in our local economy. We’ve all got things in our pantry that we could spare to help our local food banks make it through the year. It’s easy: put together a bag or two or more of non-perishable food donations, put it out by your mailbox Saturday morning, and your letter carrier and teams of volunteers will do the rest. Tacoma and Pierce County residents have donated more than 300,000 pounds of food in past years, and this year, with the need greater than ever, the goal is 400,000 pounds.

Dukesbay Theater

A new performance space is opening up in the Merlino Arts Building. Last night Dukesbay Productions held a grand opening for its new performance venue, the Dukesbay Theater, a 40-seat black box theater on the upper floor above the Tacoma City Ballet. The 1,250-square-foot studio turned theater will be home to productions of local playwrights. For ore on the theater, check out the Dukesbay website or Facebook page.

Bike Month Events

Bike Month continues, and so do the fun events.

Tonight is the weekly Bike Commuter Meetup: every Friday, 5 p.m. at the Broken Spoke on MLK.

This Sunday is Cyclofemme: Tour Defiance, a women’s cycling event that’s part of the global women’s cycling day, with events around the world. Meet at the Antique Sandwich Company at 10 a.m., and join the group ride through Point Defiance, around Five Mile Drive. All ages and bike preferences are welcome, just don’t forget your helmet. RSVP to the CycloFemme: Tour Defiance Facebook Event.

And look forward to more events next week, including a talk on Tacoma’s Remarkable Bicycling History on Tuesday, May 14, at 6 p.m. at the Tacoma Main Public Library, the weekly free bike maintenance class, 5:30 p.m. every Monday in May at Tacoma Bike in Proctor, and the weekly five to 10 mile Beginner Bike Ride at 6:30 p.m. every Tuesday in May, also at Tacoma Bike in Proctor.

Also, if you haven’t seen it yet, you might want to check out the baby bison at Northwest Trek; who knew a baby bison would be so cute?

Okay, those are a few things we came across – what else are we missing that’s happening around town?
