A New Monday
Today is a very special Monday. Last week, after nearly two years of non-stop classes, papers, presentations, and group projects, my MBA was done. I’ve been hooded with a Masters in Business. I walked at Commencement … then I drank gimlets at Tempest, had dinner at Maxwell’s (twice), and slept in.
I need to thank the fine folks at the Milgard School of Business and the Milgard family for their generous support of my education. I need to thank my family, friends, partners, and co-workers for putting up with me and supporting me through this. I need to thank everybody that had to wait a few days (or weeks) for me to answer an email because midterms, finals, some big paper, or something else was looming.
18 months ago I had a 40+ hour/week day job, three small companies, and an endless barrage of school work. I left the day job. School is done. Now it’s time to have fun and get some work done. I look forward to this summer … and a lot more bocce.
Thank you.
Derek Young
p.s. It was quite interesting to see the Chairman of Russell, Michael Phillips, and local developer Herb Simon sitting next to each other on the stage at Commencement. Phillips was the commencement speaker. Herb Simon is on the Board of Regents. They’d lean over and whisper into each others’ ear. I kept imagining Phillips saying … “So, we need a new building.”

Congrats! Would have loved to have joined the crew at Tempest, but we had prior plans… But I owe you a drink or something.

Great job, Derek! Now you can make the big bucks and now you have something to put on your resume besides how well you can twirl a pencil… ;-) Sincere congratulations for succeeding thru all the hard work it takes!

Derek,
Congratulations on completeing your MBA. I have never forgotten what my Mother said about education, that it will always be part of you however you choose to use it. She only had one paying job after graduating from the UofW. It lasted one week! The next time I see you I’ll tell you what happend. It will give you a good laugh and tell you my Mother, despite graduating in 1938, did not need to be liberated and how much some things have changed for the better.

When I saw you last, I didn’t realize that you were done done. Imagined it was the end of a semester or something. I should have been more impressed and bought you a $2 beer or something :)

Congrats, Derek! I remember “interviewing” you for the MBA program in Starbucks a couple years ago. Glad you made it through alive and better for the experience! You’ll have to update your bio on the About page soon with your new credentials. :)

Good work! And it went by so fast! Time flies when you’re having fun… or is it time flies when you’re busy?

Thank you, everybody. I still have a feeling of dread because I’m not writing a paper or reading a Case Study right now.
I’ll work on that bio … someday. It’s on my list.
