A Wee Little Murray Morgan Update

The TNT is reporting that the state legislature is set to pass a new transportation package that ups the state’s contribution toward the Murray Morgan bridge. What was once $26 million will now be $40 million. That leaves a gap of another $40 million that folks hope can be found via other funding sources. Bake sale anyone?

This bridge is such an interesting story! City Council hasn’t given up hope of recovering the full amount from the DOT yet. Paula Hammond is planning to meet with Mr. Baarsma regarding this issue pretty soon. When DOT took control of the bridge, it was done with the understanding (in writing) that when it was returned to the City of Tacoma, it would be done so in FULL working condition. It didn’t go down like that. There’s still hope there folks…
It serves as the only like between downtown and the heart of its port industry center. According to Bill, the time from fire house 1 to the port across the bridge is 2 minutes…. it’s 15 by going around. Do the math. This plus the addition of the multi million dollar ocean research facility proposed on the other side of Thea… this baby will be saved. Though The Mayor can’t approach it from a historical preservation standpoint (you all should understand that) he CAN approach it from emergency access and future development of that side of the waterway…

…and for being a cheaper option than tearing it down and building a new bridge in its place.
