Almond Roca vs. Aplets and Cotlets

Are you ready for a little cross-mountain smack talk?

It would seem that State Representative Mike Armstrong (R-Wenatchee) is the sponsor of a bill that would make Aplets & Cotlets the official Washington state candy. He tried the same thing a few years ago and received a negative reaction from the fans of Tacoma-made Almond Roca. Now, it’s not that our beloved Roca hasn’t tried either. A bill that would’ve named Almond Roca the official state candy appeared and died in 2001.

This year it’s Aplets & Cotlets turn. Have an opinion? Let your elected leaders know!

This can not be allowed to happen. Aplets and Cotlets are downright nasty. I think most people agree. See the subject thread on KOMO News website:

    http://www.komonews.com/news/36851759.html (cut and paste?)

We need to spread the word that all the delicious confections of Brown and Haley are available in Tacoma. Peanut butter mountain bars are my favorite.

I view Aplets and Cotlets as simply deconstructed fruit cake. On the other hand, I must admit that I’ve never truly understood the appeal of a Roca either. My wife tells me it’s because I don’t drink coffee but that’s another post.

I will agree whole heartedly that Brown and Haley’s collection of confections is fabulous and there has to be something in there to satisfy any sweet tooth.

What if we have the Official State Candy be selected by each Governor based on their favorite candy? Make it a rotating deal! It would make for more interesting election talk (but again, that a topic for a different post.)

I think that any Representative that puts forth a bill that tries to name a state candy should be forced to work in a food bank for 30 days straight. Then should be forced to report back to the people what voted them in and explain what is more important. Candy or people.

It is my opinion that Almond Roca is wonderful. I especially like their offshoot “mocha roca”.

I have never heard of Aplets and Cotlets. I will never try their product because I have always prfered the term “Active X” to “Java applet” and “Cotlets” reminds me of “veal cutlets” which is not candy-like at all.

Do we really need a state ratified “official Candy”?

If so, then we need an Official State jazz quartet. I nominate the “Bill Barnett Quartet”

I don’t really like Almond Roca, or Aplets and Cotlets, but it seems to me that having a particular brand of candy be more or less endorsed by the state is problematic. what about Frangoes? Chukar Cherries (ugh)?

Where does it end? Should we, as a coffee capital of the universe, have an official state coffee? Since some of the best beer in the country is brewed in Washington, what about an official beer? Should Nordstrom’s be our official department store?

also, I tend to concur with #3.

Is this really even a serious debate? I have never known anyone who preferred a Applet & Cotlet to an Almond Roca in all my days. The only time I have ever had one is at my grandmas house…

  • Mofo from the Hood December 30, 2008

I like the crushed almond and chocolate part of Almond Roca.

  • morgan December 30, 2008

I have nothing against Aplets and Cotlets. Personally, I like their offshoots like the sours and other fruits… whatever they’re called.

Why not just have an Offical Washington State Hard Candy and an Offical Washignton State Soft Candy? Everybody wins!

Who ever said our state reps. weren’t working for us? This is absurd. That anyone would actually put forth such a bill as to officially name a state candy really irritates me. These people were elected by their constituents to introduce something slightly more meaningful. I’m opposed to both candies and would instead like to see some solutions regarding transportation, education, affordable housing and public services suggested.

Actually, it is the important stuff that our elected wizards keep effing up. Let them argue about applets and roca and leave the important issues to somebody who actually understands things and can come up with some answers. Maybe throw the legislature a nice juicy bone to chew on like whether or not to force the Huskies to play at Qwest Field rather than spending $300 million to renovate Taj Mahontlake.

  • Sassy McButterpants December 30, 2008

I’m sure the candy industry would argue it’s an important topic. These businesses employ people and promote the state. Besides, let’s face it, no ones working on the economy, they’re working on candy or working on their secretaries…

If we rallied to get Almond Roca the official state candy, does that mean that Gov’s candy bowl will be filled with our home-town candy?
Will it become one of those gifts handed to visiting VIPs?

That has got to be good for Tacoma.

Let’s show some home-town pride and support our Tacoma businesses.

Where do I sign the petition?

    I have a thought:

    Why not 2 official candies?
Some state have 2 mottos, or 2 songs. Why not just put the candies on equal status?

Personally, I prefer Roca to the Cotlet, but two candies would make most happy.

Speak of Roca, when is the City gonna rename E 26th “Brown & Haley Drive”?

  • Squid December 30, 2008

    Thorax: Fred Haley Way.

  • Thorax O'Tool December 30, 2008

    Nice.

  • jamie from thriceallamerican December 31, 2008

    Wouldn’t the Browns be pissed?

(Trivia: I have a friend from the Haley clan who went to college at Brown…)

  • Jesse December 31, 2008

I think both aren’t the best candies out there… but… have you tried the Almond Roca Buttercrunch Cookie Bars? TO.DIE.FOR.

  • Squid December 31, 2008

I may be wrong, but I think the Almond Roca-Browns are long gone from T-town.

We are still thick with Haleys here. Fred was one of the nicest and just men I have ever met. If you got him going he could chain-smoke Shakespeare sonnets and soliloquies.

  • Thorax O'Tool December 31, 2008

Je a mis ma voix dedans pour change que l’est 26 eme soit en <<Brown & Haley Dr >>.
Et nous pouvons retitrer le reste de la rue <<K>> a <<Fred Haley Jr Wy>>

I speak French when I have been drinking too.

  • Thorax O'Tool January 2, 2009

  • jcm January 4, 2009

    Thorax,

is there a lot of pressure to drink in France?

  • Thorax O'Tool January 5, 2009

Mais oui! En France, tout le monde buvons parce que boire est une part de la culture.
    Même les enfants buvons.

  • Squid January 5, 2009

This thread has gone to les chiens.

  • Mofo from the Hood January 5, 2009

I think the masthead is supposed to read: “Le Exit 133.”

  • KATHI January 5, 2009

ALMOND ROCA is still made in Tacoma aka T-town. They are still in the same place as they have been since 1912. I just became a “fan” of their face book page! I love Almond Roca always have! I also like the Mountain Bars that they still make but are not as easy to find!

  • Thorax O'Tool January 5, 2009

@ Mofo: in French, you use the apostrophe to get rid of extra vowels when using articles. It should read:
    L’Exit 133
    (pronounced “leg-zeet sant trant twa”)

@ Kathi, go to the Brown & Haley store at the factory. Not only can you find nearly everything they make, but you can get Boo-Boos for cheap.

That’s right, misshapen Mountain Bars for $Cheap.

    Gotta love it!

  • Mofo from the Hood January 6, 2009

    Merci monsieur O’Tool,
    L’Mofo

  • Monsieur Thorax O'Tool January 6, 2009
