America's Got Talent - Back in Tacoma for 2011

We just noticed on the newswire that America’s Got Talent is coming back to Seattle Tacoma to hold auditions.

The “America’s Got Talent” auditions are a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for performers across the country and the series’ producers continue to challenge potential contestants to showcase their talents in 90 seconds. Every type of performer is welcome – this includes musicians, dance crews, magicians, contortionists, comedians, singers, jugglers, animal acts and everything in between – all of whom want to perform for America’s votes and the coveted $1 million prize.

Surely you’ve always longed for this opportunity to audition before the likes of Simon Cowell, Tyra Banks or… no, no. Bruno Tonioli, Paula Abdul or Jillian Michaels? Arrghhh! No, that’s not it either. Anyhow, so you think you can dance with the stars and be the last biggest loser standing? So do we! We support you 100% because Exit133 watches “America’s Got Talent” every single day.

Go get ‘em, champs.

I didn’t think I had to subject myself to news about low brow TV shows when I read Exit 133 — I hope this is an aberration.

Tacoma needs more coverage of indie culture, local politics, urban planning, and transportation? If not here, then where?

    Dolly –

I’m sure most of my personal opinions would appear low-brow or in poor taste to many readers.

I’d be more of a stick-in-the-mud if i ignored this story for indie reasons than i am for running it.

Granted, there were other art stories in town we could have devoted time to today – Such as the closing of the art supply store downtown. Every day in the life of Exit133 is, like any community blog, an evolving collaboration amongst busy people. I’ll admit that most days, I go to bed wishing i’d written a dozen other stories. So I appreciate your criticism, and hope to maintain your interest.

Just wanted to let you know that your comments are meaningful.

i, yawn, have seen that there is plenty coverage of the local politics, urban whatever, and how to move meat puppets from a to b on exit133. but the indie stuff, well, there first has to be a scene before there can be any reporting on it i would think. i mean, i read the fuking volcano and all they have to report on tacoma’s indie scene are bands who ‘fail on their own terms’ HAHAHA. but that to me is the epitome of being independent. not only being independent of labels, but also independent of success. which is a great way to suck, but still be cool.

Thanks for the reply, Dan. I feel like Exit 133 has largely been about elevating dialogue in Tacoma compared to other media outlets, not making sure it covers what’s most popular generally. We have enough mainstream media to report on America’s Got Talent. We need media that really digs into the challenges and opportunities this city faces. There’s a regional caricature of Tacoma out there that affects our town’s ability to attract investment and creative residents. That caricature is reinforced by monster truck shows and cheesy TV auditions at the Tacoma Dome.

i totally would love to see what crawls out from the burbs onto the stage at the tacoma dome for this. that if anything will be a good indicator of what is creating this ‘regional caricature’. and also a grand opportunity to then seal and pump the dome full of raid.

Dan, thanks for posting the info. Too many people have nothing better to do than complain about everything that goes on in this town. First they complain that nothing ever gets done here, then when something good does happen, they find some new way to complain about that too! For instance, the Thea Foss Hotel. Complain that the city is blocking the deal, then when the plans are announced, they turn right into bashing a decent hotel design. In today’s case, we have a national, prime time TV show coming to Tacoma. People should be happy that Tacoma is being chosen over Seattle, but instead they find some reason to complain about it. Wake up people! Tacoma isnt going to have some artsy or indie revolution and become popular. I enjoy art just as much as the next guys, but that stuff compliments a thriving city, not makes one.
In the case of Dan’s reporting of the story. Good for you! This is very big news for our city, and im pretty sure its nowhere to be found yet on the News Tribune website at least. Look where else the auditions are being held: NYC, Atlanta, Houston, etc. This weekend is going to draw thousands of people into Tacoma from all over the northwest for an entire weekend. So all you out there can go and complain about the “monster truck and cheesy TV auditions,” but im sure as hell these events do more for our city than some local art exhibit.

    @low bar

Last year an a cappella choir from PLU did fairly well on the show. Sorry to hear your opinion is so low of these people… what have you done for this city?

  • low bar November 11, 2010

oh no you did not just pull the choir card on me. wow, now i look like a crazy atheist who thinks spraying synthetic pyrethroid on an a flock of lutherans is an act worthy of being seen on america’s got talent.

jimbo, some people have insatiable tastes. yes, you can call this complaining, but like we must with your singing lutherans, you must find a way to live with our forms of cultural expression too:) thank you.

Huh. There’s a first time for everything. In this thread, I actually disagreed with something dolly varden said (quite the rarity, usually he/she is right on but in this case I appreciate a bit of light mockery of a TV reality show as it relates to Tacoma) and laughed at something that low bar said (because let’s face it, Lutherans are funny, especially in flocks…which I say as a raised-Lutheran-and-PLU-alum flock strayer).

  • dolly varden November 11, 2010

My reflexive reaction against TV singing shows is hard to overcome, Jamie — not sure if that’s a weakness or a strength. Posting the Stephen Colbert-ish flag logo for the show (absent the irony) didn’t help.

Plus, I was looking for an excuse to say that Exit 133 seems to need a bit of a shot in the arm. Not that I don’t appreciate that it’s no one’s full time job and that it’s not an easy thing to do…

  • low bar November 12, 2010

i think the subtle humor (whether deliberate or not) in posting the america’s got talent/pierce county sings jpegs is great. more of this please.

Does anyone know if the public can go and watch the people audition?
