Amocat Cafe Makes a Great First Impression

As many readers of our readers already know, Amocat Cafe has finally officially opened. Located at 625 St Helens Ave in downtown Tacoma (near Puget Sound Pizza and the Mix), this vibrant cafe pays tribute to Tacoma with its name and its locally-focused menu.

The brightly colored and historically grounded decor of the space exudes the optimism and diligence of its proprietor, Morgan Alexander (of the Tacoma Improvement Club, LLC). It is divided into three separate rooms, with dining areas centered around the main counter. One wing also serves as a gallery to feature the work of local artists. In the near future, Amocat’s patrons will be able to purchase “made in Tacoma” retail goods – including beer and wine. Despite current logistical challenges, Alexander ultimately hopes to develop Amocat’s own line of beer and wine.

Amocat coffee comes from Valhalla Coffee Company, which has created a special blend for their use. This unique blend makes for a remarkably effective and delicious cup of cappuccino. If coffee is not your speed, Mad Hat tea is also on the menu, along with a cooler-full of cold beverages.

Inspired by the community spirit fostered by the likes of the Mandolin and Blackwater cafes, Amocat offers an ideal setting for conversation, study, work and acoustic music. We welcome this beautiful new cafe to our community. Though its name may be “Tacoma” in reverse, from what we’ve seen so far, we anticipate Amocat Cafe will help move our downtown forward.

Congratulations, Morgan!

Thank you Amocat for sponsoring this Friday’s Frost Park Chalk Off with a $50 Gift Certificate hand illuminated by local cartoon funny-man RR Anderson!

That’s a newsworthy development in and of itself, sir.

    Also — BUY NOW!

Thanks for stopping in today Dan and writing such nice words! The response from the community has been so supportive! I have a lot in store for the little cafe – good food, fresh beer, live music – I can’t wait!

    Uh, Erik B:

Marty and Mark are hardly “dignitaries” despite some people’s adoration and although I’m sure they would refer to themselves as such.

Nice story, though, and I look forward to helping this cafe be a success.

Very exciting for Morgan… and he seems like such a nice guy to boot.

Are they going to hang local art on the walls and have it for sale? Perhaps fill the space with more furniture by using the local antique stores rougher tables and chairs sets and putting big price tags on them thus doubling the cafe as a store. Just a thought. Ways to fill the place with art and furniture for free as a new business gets off the ground…

But ya, this is great for the area. Good work Morgan!

How late are they open during the week? Do they have wifi?

  • MrsS June 3, 2010

Oh cool! I walk down 7th everyday to get to work and hadn’t noticed this place yet. I think I’ll have to stop in sometime very soon!

    That’s exciting!

I’m a big fan of the environment of cafes, and miss the space vacated by Blackwater.

I love Mandolin, but it’s 2 miles from home, and this place is only about half a mile.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Amocat, which does have a cool ring to it, keeps decent hours.

Tacoma has a MILLION “7 am to 5 pm” cafes, but when I’d like to drink a cup of coffee and read, write, etc after dinner, my choices are pretty much limited to:

    Mandolin
The Tully’s in the Bostwick building, on weekends
Satellite, one or two of the three

I know that laws about serving wine and preparing food kind of buzzkill getting businesses together…

But, Morgan, if you’ve got the hours, I’ll be there!

Just read the Tacoma Daily Index hours, says 6:30am – 3:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

I am at work 100% of those hours.

Well, maybe I won’t be able to give it a try yet!

Place is looking great – congrats Morgan. Love the art in the gallery.

    Argentius:

The currently posted hours are only temporary. New extended hours will be announced soon.

    Three cheers for American enterprise.

Have you posted your new business announcement in The Tacoma Sun?

Also, Tacoma has an improvement club with limited liability? Down with litigious disimprovers!

Great place for a community and business meetings! Morgan let us hold our two day strategic planning meeting in the back room. Such a likable guy and family- we insisted on buying a profuse amount of beverages. Beyond appealing to hip coffee drinkers- Amocat’s back room is a great place to hold your next meeting. We did. Felt great to support the local cafe.

  • Amocat Cafe June 6, 2010

Wow! Thanks for making our week such a positive experience! The response has been so wonderful – we can’t wait to see where this goes.

Re: Hours – Our current hours are M-F 6:30-3pm temporarily so we can put some much needed pieces in place (like shelving!)

We hope to be open until 8 or 9 and on Saturdays within a few weeks. If there’s enough support – we’ll add Sundays too!

    Thanks!
    Morgan

That Cimocat is Awsome. Morgan should put this on one of the walls.

  • crenshaw sepulveda June 8, 2010

Bella Balls, this Cimocat needs Bella Balls.

  • RR Anderson June 8, 2010

apparently the strategic mistake on this Cimocat was the lack of Bella Balls.

    Alleb Balls?
