Apply Today to Serve on the Sustainable Tacoma Commission

Residents interested in the implementation of Tacoma’s Climate Action Plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions have a chance to apply to serve on the Sustainable Tacoma Commission.

The City is looking for two new members to fill vacancies on the commission, which seeks to provide a balanced representation of various stakeholders, including the environmental community, small business, labor, housing, industry and port, transportation, education the building industry, and residents. One appointment will fill a vacated position, which expires April 30, 2014. The second is for a three-year term, expiring April 30, 2016.

The Commission is intended to bring citizen accountability, transparency, and vigilance to the long-term implementation of Tacoma’s Climate Action Plan. The Commission is also charged with overseeing, coordinating, communicating and encouraging public involvement regarding broader sustainability initiatives.

Duties of the Sustainable Tacoma Commission include:

  • Oversee implementation of climate action plan strategies.
  • Coordinate with the Office of Environmental Policy & Sustainability to obtain greenhouse gas emissions reduction reports.
  • Obtain updates from the Office of Environmental Policy & Sustainability on climate action plan strategy implementation efforts and periodic result reports.

    • Provide annual progress reports to the public.

    • Communicate barriers to and incentives for implementation to the City Council.

    • Create a forum for regular public comment and community involvement.

    The city has the interrelated goals. Those goals include INCREASING POPULATION DENSITY and REDUCING GREENHOUSE GASES.

    The problem for Tacoma is that these goals enjoy an inverse relationship. Therefore, as populations increase there will be a corresponding decrease in air quality. But pretending that both goals are achievable and beneficial keeps lots of bureaucrats gainfully employed

    By increasing density, people live closer to goods, services, and jobs. Many trips are just a short walk, bike ride, or bus ride away. That reduces car trips and GHG emissions, not increases them.
