Art Show to Open New Venue "the Space"

Opera Alley is getting a new art space, and some art to fill it.

Tacoma artist and events manager Athena Renee Hitson debuts the Space Jan. 21 with a group exhibition featuring work from Robert Evans, Chuck Knigge, and Audra Laymon.

The opening reception runs from 5-11 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21, with the exhibition continuing until March 13.

Presenter Katy Evans writes in the announcement:

The title for the show, derived from a passing joke between one artist and the curator, has come to convey (in an absurd and roundabout way) the invention and creativity that can occur through communication. Peanut Butter Space Jam strives to share this same process, this movement from titillation to meaning, through the artists’ work. Recontextualized beyond the intent of the artists, the works share a laugh and provoke questions. Within the curated setting, the viewer is invited to develop and examine relationships with and between the portraits. From fun to profundity, from friendship to antagonism, from intimacy to exposure, and from questions to answers, Peanut Butter Space Jam will strive to reveal these connections and more through the expression and movement in a human face.
