Asia Pacific Cultural Center Grand Opening

The Asia Pacific Cultural Center has a new home, and they’re excited to share it with you. The APCC has taken over the old South Park Community Center space on South Tacoma Way, leasing the space from Metro Parks. Next Thursday, May 24th, they will be throwing open the doors to the public for tours, food samples from API countries, and to meet instructors from their many programs.
The celebration comes as the APCC is in the middle of some pretty intense planning for its dream home, which it would like to locate in downtown Tacoma, but that hasn’t stopped them from presenting a diverse range of activities. A sampling of events includes the ongoing monthly tea ceremonies from a different Asia Pacific culture each month, children’s activities, origami, calligraphy, and fitness activities, including Tae Kwondo, Kung Fu, Tai Chi, Kendo, and what looks to be a very active “hot hula fitness” class and many other cultural activities. APCC has its roots firmly in the Asian Pacific cultural community, but events are open to all.
Asia Pacific Cultural Center Grand Opening
When: Thursday, May 24, 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Where: 4851 South Tacoma Way, Tacoma
Details: www.AsiaPacificCulturalCenter.org or visit the APCC Facebook page
The APCC is renting the space from Metro Parks as it works to realize a dream of a permanent APCC home. The move to the old South Park Community Center space, including administrative offices will give the APCC a home base to plan, and to grow the memberships and partnerships it will need to realize the long-term vision of a massive cultural center development. We haven’t heard much lately on the City end about progress on the APCC’s hopes for the downtown parcel. Last we heard the APCC had submitted its 2010 financial review to the City, and the City was assessing the extent of soil contamination at the site uphill from UW Tacoma. Depending on how that all works out, this could be a very big year for the APCC; Thursday will be a great chance to stop by, wish them well, and maybe sign up for one of those hot hula classes…
