Award-winning Producer of Avatar and Titanic to Speak in Tacoma Thursday

It isn’t very often that one sees “Avatar” and “Tacoma” in the same headline. Even so, Jon Landau, the Acadamey Award-winning producer of “Avatar” and “Titanic”, will be speaking Thursday morning, November 18, at 11:30am at Tacoma Community College.

Landau will speak on the film industry, in addition to covering topics of business management and marketing innovation. The presentation will be hosted in Building 3 of the Community College campus. Visitor parking permits can be obtained at the campus security desk.

Landau’s Hollywood pedigree speaks for itself. The film “Titanic” sent shockwaves through popular culture with its daring portrayal of the turbulent inner life of a luxury cruise liner. “Avatar”, following more than a decade later, was its stunning sequel, which rejected big-budget sheen in favor of guerrilla cinema idioms.

For more information on today’s presentation, see the TNT coverage here or go to www.tacomacc.edu.

“The film “Titanic” sent shockwaves through popular culture with its daring portrayal of the turbulent inner life of a luxury cruise liner.”

Daring portrayal? Shockwaves? I think the film was a disturbing manifestation of James Cameron’s id run amok.

The technical details of both films were pretty amazing, but James “Man-Child” Cameron should never, ever be allowed to write the story.

Alien 2 (or Aliens) the criterion collection was pretty awesome. A female protagonist in a power mech fighting cosmic alien horror… pretty well sums up the modern-day feminist struggle narrative. “They mostly come at night, mostly” – thus the downfall of man.

    Isn’t this event on Thursday?

I’ve never seen Titanic or Avatar (more an an indie fan), but I’d be very interested in what Landau has to say. He also worked as a music producer for many years. Sounds like he has quite a bit of insight into the entertainment industry and business management of talent.

Yes, the event is Thursday. Thank you, Maria. Correction made.

    Maria:

Also, i think the music producer Jon Landau is a different person from film producer Jon Landau – if you’re thinking of the fellow who championed Springsteen.

    Tom:

I agree that the storylines of both Avatar and Titanic were quite weak. Thus my tongue-in-cheek treatment.

Aliens, however — not bad at all.

apparently my humor detector is on the fritz. i figured the language was taken from some press release.

seriously though, Titanic made me mad. there was a ton of cinematic potential there squandered by a self indulgent director with absolutely no sense of restraint.

it shouldn’t have won best picture. but given the investment, it could have been an all time great.

PEOPLE WHO THINK TITANIC IS BAD NEED TO SIT DOWN AND BE QUIET. I SAW THAT MOVIE OVER 200 TIMES IN COLLEGE IN CALIFORNIA. SURE IT IS JUST A VEHICLE FILM FOR ACTOR BILL PAXTON, BUT IT HAS MOMENTS OF COMPLETE WONDERMENTLIKE WHEN THE OLD LADY THROWS HER BELOVED JEWEL INTO THE OCEANALSO EVRYTIME I SAW THE ‘MY HEART GOES ON’ VIDEO ON VH1 I WOULD CRY, BECAUSE YES, HEARTS DO GO ON. PEOPLE LIKE LOW BAR NEED TO GO BACK TO FILM SCHOOL AND LEARN SOMETHING FROM THIS MOVIE. YES AND THERE ARE GHOSTS AT THE END. LIKE WHEN SHE DIES AND GOES BACK TO THE TITANIC WHERE ALL THE SPIRITS ARE TRAPPED IN LIMBO. PROOF THAT HELL FOR SOME IS HEAVEN FOR OTHERS. SHUT UP! DON’T EVEN!
