Beautiful Angle Holiday Party
In what has become a December tradition for us, the fine folks at Beautiful Angle will be hosting their fourth annual holiday party and benefit poster sale on December 12th at Black Water Cafe.
Why should you come? Posters will be on sale for cheap. Food. Coffee. Music by Oh Yeah Hell Yeah. Good food. Great people. Lots of letterpress love. Proceeds plus donations will benefit Layla House, an orphanage in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the former home of two members of the Beautiful Angle family.
The first 50 folks to bring in a cash donation of at least $5 will receive a commemorative BA poster. 7 pm. Don’t be late.

So it starts at 7pm? What kind of posters are being sold?
T Thorax O'Tool December 2, 2008
I like the idea behind BA.
But can I really be the only one who thinks their designs aren’t particularly noteworthy? As a starving artist myself, I’m glad to see local artists getting publicity and of course, $$$
But I still think they’re overrated.

…and for those out there thinking or planning on writing:
“Well, if you think you can do a better job…”
Careful what you ask for… I just might take you up on it.
R RR Anderson December 2, 2008
Thorax, you just haven’t seen their extensive letterpress nude studies which never make it on the public streets.
I enjoy it… Though some of that work is really twisted and sick. I don’t really go for their super perverted stuff. but hey, different strokes for different folks.

I haven’t seen one of the BA posters on St. Helens for so long I thought they went out of business Lots of kiosk space by the guitar shop and yet no Beautiful Angle, perverted or otherwise. I have heard tales of the BA women of Tacoma parking enforcement series of posters, I thought that was just an urban legend.

@1 Monica
It officially starts at 7pm but people have been known to show up early so don’t be late. They usually have an assortment of posters, from old school to brand new, at good prices. (BA is the hand done letterpress posters that get posted around town once per month. However, they are increasingly hard to see posted because collectors take them down.)
@2 Thorax
Beautiful Angle does not take any money above what they need to pay for costs. All of the money beyond their production budget goes to charity. This year the charity chosen is very important to the BA family and is described in the post above. The folks who do the BA posters have real jobs and do this because they enjoy creating. And they love Tacoma. It’s as pure and simple as that.

All good points, and I would like to see some of the letterpress studies.
But that doesn’t mean that I still can’t find their posters uninspiring. Opinion is just that.
A couple other things to mention:
It’s great that they donate $$$ to charity, and I am not saying anything bad about making money. If they kept the profit, that would be fine too, not all artists want to starve.
It’s also great that they love T-town. I wish even half the folks in this city cared half as much as they did… a lot more good stuff would get done.
Also, a “real job”? To live is to create, to create is to live. Art is not a job, it is a compulsion; something you just have to do… profit or not. If you don’t tap the fiery beast within, you’re not being true to your nature. Creating is beyond being just a mere job, it is a way of life.

Hmmm, I think Beautiful Angle does really good, really beautiful work that is also thought-provoking. I see them in the long tradition of joining pretty stuff with socially-challenging messages. It’s also very cool they’re Tacomaphiles.
I like their work so much, I wanted to invite some Seattle and Portland artist friends to see their retrospective @ PLU.
Fans of poster art, letterpress or graphic design might be fond of their use of white space, deft combo of words/images, really good letterpress technique, and highly iconic work.
However, this type of “flatstock” isn’t really everyone’s favorite. I personally love it.
BTW, for fans of Beautiful Angle / letterpress / poster art, there are two other great shows this winter in the Northwest—Hatch Show at the EMP, and Ames Bros coming to the Tacoma Library Dec. 11.

Thorax, how dare you. How dare you criticize Beautiful Angle! They’re doing the best with what god gave them. You probably don’t know this but most of the equipment they use is like from the 1970’s ! Some of their equipment is probably even older than that!!! Such obsolete technology comes with limitations (obviously).
God damn it, they’re not super wealthy techno boppers like the attractive ladies and spikey-haired dudes over at Rusty George. I bet Lance doen’t even have a monitor bigger than 15 inches! and Can you imagine creative production without a wacom stylus??? HECK And Tom can’t draw… and that’s like having one hand tied behind your back.
Give BA a break. And your money. They’re busting their asses for the glory of art.

Wow. Impressive BA styled work there RR. Looks ready to wheatpaste. Weird Al would be proud.
C crenshaw sepulveda December 3, 2008
Does Beautiful Angle even use wheatpaste these days?
T Thorax O'Tool December 3, 2008
“I bet Lance doen’t even have a monitor bigger than 15 inches!“
A real man has a 17” monitor.

“A real man has a 17” monitor.”
Hey, let’s not get into a pixeling contest here.

I agree with Thorax. I am an average artist that has a passion to grow and learn. Some of the posters I create are just ordinary but each one is a learning experience – a process – where I can try, fail, and succeed. And then try, fail, and succeed again. What are you doing to engage the community?
BTW mine is 20”

“What are you doing to engage the community?
BTW mine is 20’“
I got something brewing, hopefully starting in Jan 2009.
And 20”? DAMN. I thought my 19” seemed big. Have you seen those 22” ones? That’s bigger than my TV!
C crenshaw sepulveda December 8, 2008
I had a puny 19 incher but then I got this special deal in the email and now I have a 24 incher.
L Lance Kagey December 9, 2008
You go Thorax. Can’t wait to see your home brew. If all us artists were doing something on a regular basis Daniel Blue’s commentary on the art scene would be entirely different. All it takes is doing it. It is surprising to me that I find time for all this but I just do it and everything seems to work out.
T Thorax O'Tool December 9, 2008
I would love it if all the artists in town even did one thing a month; this place could be an arts mecca.
If everything even went halfway like I dream, the Tacoma Renaissance will be on the tips of everybody’s tongues and in the papers!
