Weekend review: Art on the Ave and battle of the cover bands
Oh my goodness, it was hot this weekend.
The sun cooked a marathon dodgeball game on Saturday. Dodgeball Tacoma host bouts at 1 p.m. every Saturday at Franklin Park and is starting a mid-week game at 6 p.m. on Wednesdays for those folks who have their Saturdays busy with other matters.
Art on the Ave on Sunday drew thousands of people to Sixth Avenue for all things artsy and community. There were bands and booths and beer and beads. And there was a lot of sun.
One funny thing in Tacoma during the last few days was the dueling concerts of Kry on Thursday at Jazzbones followed by Just Dirt at the same venue the following night. What made it funny was that the cover bands share set lists more often than not. Easily two thirds of Just Dirt’s songs were played by Kry the previous night. Certainly there are enough rock somes to cover to not share such strong similarities.
To be fair, Just Dirt wasn’t all bad, but it clearly doesn’t have the strong female following and musical abilities to cover the music of others as Kry.
Toss in the fact that the Afrodisiacs and its alter ego, Spasmatics played at different venues on the same night Saturday, and it was a cover band weekend.
