Bigger Signs For Point Ruston?

The developers at Point Ruston have submitted a land use permit request this week, requesting a waiver to the S-6 Shoreline District sign regulations.

The request is to allow businesses in the Point Ruston Copperline mixed-use development to post signage under less restrictive requirements than would normally be permitted in the S-6 zone where it is located.

Ultimately Point Ruston seeks to waive the requirements and gain approval of an alternative sign requirement that is more reasonable and appropriate for this context.

More specifically, Point Ruston would like to apply signage standards as outlined for commercial and mixed-use CIX, CCX, and UCX zones in Tacoma.

To get the desired waiver, the folks over at Point Ruston will have to meet six requirements having to do with the impacts on adjacent properties, the intended character of the area, sight distance and safety for vehicles and pedestrians, and not blocking views of or pedestrian access to the shoreline. For more on how Point Ruston answers these requirements, read the answers in their own words from the public notice.

Design and aesthetic conditions may be imposed to keep the signage appropriate if the waiver is granted. This phase of the Point Ruston project is nearing completion, with expected occupancy as soon as the first quarter of 2013, so signage questions will be a reality soon. Public comment is open through January 22.

So… any problem with bigger signage? Any caveats you would place on a waiver, if granted?

This sign approval sounds like a no-brainer but I wish I could have vetoed their architect.
