Black Water Moving to St. Helens

After sitting on the news for weeks as business deals were finalized, the news finally hit twitter so …

Black Water Cafe is moving to 743 St. Helens in the old Mocha Mountain space near Club Silverstone. As you may recall, there was a minor panic when a rumor started spreading that Black Water would be closing. The truth was that they were moving. As business deals weren’t quite done yet, they didn’t want the word out. Well …

More details shortly.

    BLACKWATERGATE!

I think they will do well in their new location. I’m looking to see a bit more life on the streets on St. Helens and Blackwater will do that nicely. I only wish the Republican Headquarters came up for rent a bit sooner as it would have made a really great space for the Blackwater. I hope they can still use their great sign at the new location.

interesting… we often decry the city’s policies, B&O tax, land use/parking regulations, etc.

Now, let me see… if you only include the stuff on St Helens from 9th to where it stops being one way, we have:
    The photography place
    Bostick Apts
    Christian Science Reading Room
    Tully’s
    Fidel’s All American Barber Shop
    that mini-mart
    the guitar place
    and soon, Blackwater.

Anyone else see the irony of a somewhat dense, diverse and kinda thriving business area in the shadow of City Hall?

I can’t give a name, right off, to the photography place, but the guitar place is Guitar Maniacs and, of course, there’s Margaret’s … a fine salad and soup lunch place (and great oatmeal for breakfast).

I thought One Heart was moving into this space?

When I read that headline, I thought you meant the other Blackwater (the evil one) was moving to the other St. Helens (the explosive one) to set up an underground volcano lair. Made sense. Still does, actually…

Yay! My brother-in-law co-owned and ran Mocha Mountain for several years when I was still in school, and I loved that place (especially when he expanded to the space next door and hosted open mic nights). Unfortunately, once he sold it, the cafe seemed to go downhill, and last time I checked it was closed and full of junk. I can’t wait to visit Blackwater in such a nostalgic place. I can’t remember if the bear painting was left alone or painted over, but it would be awesome if it stayed.

According to Rachel, the bear was painted over before by a previous tenant before they moved in.

I’m really excited about seeing the new Blackwater digs.

Whatever happened to One Heart? My main problem with the space next to the Grand is the layout of the building. Whoever moves in there should do a renovation and open up the space.

great folks at Tully’s when we need our fix…but the coffee is meh, only serviceable mostly…….I Am So Happy blackwater is coming to our area…now I won’t have to walk very uphill, and can get there by going up Whore Alley !! hooray for Tacoma !!

This is the space that One Heart was going to move into. From what we know they had signed lease but something didn’t work out and the space became available again.

Great news for the Blackwater! Good luck on a smooth transition and stress-free move.

Does anyone know if there are any potential tenants for the space next to the Grand? It was so convenient to have a cafe next to our indie cinema.

I must have been the only one at the “don’t paint over the bear” rally. Well, there was me and couple of smokers but they weren’t really protesting, just smoking. One of them said it would be cool if the bear had a cigarette painted in his lips. After that the protest sort of went down hill.

I really want to know how Rachel will incorporate the Blackwater sign into the new building. I don’t want to have to lead another protest.

So much love for the bear! I am touched.

Best of luck to the Blackwater.

I LOVE Blackwater!!! Since I have moved away from Downtown I have yet to have a really great cup of coffee here on the Southend. I went a couple of weeks ago with my boyfriend and both of us agreed that we had been away from Blackwater way to long. The white chocolate mocha was SHEER Heaven.

This actually makes me a little sad. I think the old Black Water space is a little more unique and interesting and I never really cared for the Mocha Mountain location. Not that any of that will stop me from buying coffee there. Any word on what will become of the old building?

  • crenshaw sepulveda February 21, 2009

It is true about the old Black Water location, it was unique and a special place on the landscape. The neighborhood was meh, but they seemed to do a good business there which is what you want, a business that brings in people regardless of the location.

  • dni February 22, 2009

This news makes me so happy. A great addition to the neighborhood.

This is a good business move. St. Helens and Broadway will be the place to be in the coming years.

  • Erik B. February 27, 2009

Blackwater Cafe is moving. They will close on February 28th and will reopen on 743 St. Helens in downtown Tacoma on March 6th.

  • altered Chords February 27, 2009

Personally, I’m very happy. I don’t mind a good uphill walk but going from 1124 Broadway all the way up 9th to Fawcett was a bit much for a cup of coffe (no matter how good). I will enjoy many more cups of Blackwater goodness!
