Book Discussion at the Main Library - TONIGHT
The Things They Carried is the book du jour if you count everyone wanting to read it. It was the book of the month for Reading is Sexy at the Tempest in January. It was also selected as the 2008 Tacoma Reads Together book. Now the Tacoma Public Library is hosting a discussion with local writers about the art of storytelling and using this book as an example.
From the email:
The Things They Carried is a must-read for people who are interested in the craft of writing and the art of storytelling. It explores some fascinating questions: Why does one write? How does one write a “fictionalized” account of an event in which one has been a participant? Why does one keep telling stories of circumstances and times so painful? These South Sound authors discuss the art and craft of O’Brien’s writing.
Panelists: Peter Bacho (Nelson’s Run); Mark Lindquist (The King of Methlehem); Brent Hartinger (Geography Club) .

I think a long time ago I told this story, but the indelible impression of many years ago hearin Tim O’Brien read from The Things They Carried bears a brief repeat.
Due to the decidedly anti-war message of his stories, I was anticipating a casual guy, more to the hippie end of the spectrum than to the Ollie North side. Uh, not. O’Brien was dressed in a crisp navy suit, starched white shirt, red tie and spit-shined oxfords. He read his stories of unspeakable horror from the lecturn ram-rod straight, virtually without facial expression. The effect was, in a word, devastating. Easily the most moving reading I have ever attended.
