Boys and Girls Club Closures

We noticed in the Business Examiner yesterday that the Boys and Girls Club of South Puget Sound plans to close three area branches at Spanaway, Fredrickson, and Nelson elementary schools.  It’s another sad story of an increased demand for services coinciding with decreased funding.  The closures, largely due to cuts in government funding, will mean staff layoffs, and of course changes for the families left without their local branch.

The Boys and Girls Club provides activities for kids including sports, homework help, and other activities, as well as college scholarships.  They will be working hard to put together funding to prevent further closures or cuts in services to the South Sound community.  It’s sad to see yet another non-profit that provides such valuable services, not just to the families they serve directly, but also to the communities where they are located.
