Brewery District Feasibility Survey
The City of Tacoma is currently working on a feasibility study to encourage revitalization and re-use of the Brewery District – the downtown neighborhood just to the south of the University of Washington Tacoma campus.
Do you have any opinions? Do you use the area now? The City would like to know how you use the Brewery District and what ideas you have for its future.
The survey should take about 5-10 minutes to complete and asks questions related to development of city-owned land, historic preservation, the creative arts, and connectivity. The City of Tacoma will use this information to move forward with a vision and proposals for future development of that area that best fits the community’s needs.

I’d like to see a functioning brewery in aforementioned brewery district…

Actually, I’d also like to see some 5-10 story mid-rise multi-use development in all those empty lots as well. We got some on St Helens, why not even more on Jefferson?

I am sure the city will do a great job hanging flowers and banners and charging an outrageous BIA tax for it. And we all know what a great success the financial overlay district is. I say, let the artist and entrepreneurs looking for bargains rent or develop the area, let the market decide, let business volume drive improvements, If the city wants the Brewery district to thrive they should stay the he## out of it.

There is an interesting, and very sad, aspect to this survey. At the end, the moniker “Nob Hill” is applied to the neighborhood that surrounds Holy Rosary Church. It’s interesting that this has been adopted by the city, since it has no historical relevance and is a name applied by a FAILED development on South 29th Street. Interestingly, the properties that were to be “Nob Hill” are now for sale at about 80% of the original purchase price. Higher densities in this neighborhood of SF homes are not appropriate. When will Tacoma clue in to the idea that skyscrapers are too big for the fringes of the downtown core? Anyone else notice any foreclosed condos lately?

How ‘bout a real artisan bakery? Baking fresh baguettes, rustic country loafs, etc………

If you read the plans, the city has some good ideas for this area. Actually, they’re great ideas. Let’s see it to fruition!
My two cents would be that they need to bury power lines in that area. There are so many that it’d be comical if it weren’t so tragic.
Also, I like the idea of uncovering or recreating brick streets in that area. Way cool way to get some traffic calming and charm.
Kudos… if it comes to fruition.
