This building, a former car dealership, got a great remodel job in the early 90’s. It was vacant for years before becoming the project of a UPS student named Matt Cary. Matt and company did the majority of demolition and rebuilding and then established Cafe WA on the first floor 6th Avenue side. They specialized in some pretty great pizza by the slice—-Thank you Jenny.

This crew was pretty ambitious and they went on to establish and redevelop a former dairy farm near Arlington. The new project was called Smoke Farm School. The idea was to build and maintain a working farm/liberal arts school for resident students seeking hands on experience in agriculture economics and sustainable farming. UPS religion professor Stuart Smithers was the force behind the project.

The high quality remodeled building on 6th Avenue is a great legacy from that ambitious group.

Thanks, Mofo. Cafe WA was a great place, and I had wondered were the crew had moved on to next.
