Buy 1 Get 1 on Amtrak from Tacoma to Portland
As we were reading the Biz Buzz this morning, we saw that Amtrak was running a special on trips to Portland. It didn’t occur to us to post it because, well, it really wasn’t about Tacoma. But after saying something to the person across the desk, suddenly several other people lit up with excitement.
“Really?” “Oh, I need to do it.” “That’s great.” “Why didn’t we hear about that?”
Apparently, Tacomans really, really like Portland. So, consider yourself notified. Here’s the deal:
Amtrak is offering 1 free ticket for each full fare adult ticket purchased. Round trip tickets from Tacoma to Portland for two adults works out to about $50 on the trips we tried to plan. The offer expires May 23rd.

That’s cool! We could take the train down to see a basketball team that actually wins.

Sweet, Tacomans might be able to get round trip tickets to Portland’s city-wide Village Building Convergence happening May 23- June 1st, which is hosted annually by The City Repair Project (an all-volunteer grassroots organization helping people reclaim their urban spaces to create community-oriented places). I’ve heard nothing but good things, and plan on going regardless. Last I heard the UWT Urban Studies student group, Civitas, was planning on attending as well.
Examples of projects completed during the convergence include naturally-built landmarks and “intersection repairs,” which aim to increase the capacity of neighborhood street intersections to serve as public gathering spaces.
