Camp 6 Logging Museum Will Not Re-Open
We are sad to read this morning that the Camp 6 Logging Museum at Point Defiance Park has announced that it is closed for good. The current operators were unable to come up with a viable purchase offer or funding plan.
The artifacts at the camp will be sold, and whatever items not sold will be added to the Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad in Mineral. The railroad track must also be removed. This flurry of removal activity is expected to begin soon, so park visitors are asked to stay away from the site until it is clear.

Tacoma is not a Train Town.
T the Jinxmedic May 10, 2011
Not a train town? Are you kidding? This city was founded as a rail head.
What I think you meant is, “Tacoma is full of apathetic people who just don’t care about history in any form”.

It’s a sad day. And it’s unfortunate. Not a good year for Pt. Defiance. First the pagoda fire. Now this.

Tacoma WAS a train town. send this stuff to Mineral where people will appreciate it.

Expand the dog park!

Jinxmedic: “Tacoma is full of apathetic people who just don’t care about history in any form”.
I don’t agree with you. Perhaps if the public had been asked to help with fundraising to keep the park open it would not be closing now.
Tacoma has lots of people who love the town and its history. Historic Tacoma is one of those groups that works very hard to bring awareness to the city’s history and architecture. Unfortunately this doesn’t fall under their umbrella.
A more grass-roots effort was needed here but I don’t think that the public was aware that it was closing so quickly.

fact if the matter is it’s karma. you show up here with your stupid trains and spoil a perfectly good environment, both natural and cultural, and you expect the historical events of a suck fest settlement to stick? hahahahhahahahahah. not when it’s only whitey who cares about trains and whitey is now a minority. suck it. has nothing to do with people being apathetic. take a limitless pill. thank you:)

expand the dog park gets my vote as dogs at this point are more deserving

In truth, they seemed like nice people but were never much interested in changing anything about how they did anything, even raising their prices just a little or being a little more interactive.
You got on the train and rode it around in a circle and then nobody much cared what you did after that. Their website hasn’t improved since I moved here, and they’ve had offers of help. The scenic RR in mineral seems to have some similar issues, event dates and times are always posted super late.
If there was a way to do something to support the continued operation of the museum, it was a somewhat well-kept secret. Even anonymous complainers like myself might have chipped in if asked.

With Camp 6 on one side… gone
and Never Never Land on the other side… gone
Fort Nisqually better brace for an attack.
L low bar May 10, 2011
yeah brace for visitors getting there and having a nap attack
A Anonymous Complainer May 10, 2011
I think Fort Nisqually is safe. They do get some funding from Metro Parks, summer camps and events are held there on a regular basis and they’ve definitely got the field trip market all sewn up. They have a foundation and a strategic plan and seem to be actively interested in engaging the community, including young people.

When they say ‘stay away’ that is like ringing the meal-time triangle for treasure hunters. Snatch up a piece of local heritage before it disappears forever! Me? I’m not touching any of that stuff. I hear it is cursed.
L low bar May 10, 2011
yeah you don’t want to take a chunk of camp 666 home only to find out you pissed off a team of unemployed logger spirits with nothing better to do than startle spotted owls and bother those who take pieces of rust home to gather dust.
M Mofo from the Hood May 10, 2011
Man, you know times are hard when a place can’t make its $500.00 a year rent payment.
A artifacts May 10, 2011
There’s no curse and when its all gone there will only be ghosts. At least the camp wasn’t burnt down.
L low bar May 10, 2011
i clearly don’t understand how a place can have ghosts but then NOT be cursed. i wont be satisfied till TAPS comes out, hears voices in their heads and waves around flashlights while raccoons and the rest of us watch from the bushes and wait to get on national TV

the board should have listened to me.. My idea for Bikini-barista Steam Train rides was worth $500 a year. The Traveller would pay in gold coins.
V Volcano Boycotting RR Anderson May 11, 2011
the real question we should all be asking ourselves is this: how can we make steam locomotion and wholesale ecological disasters or destruction of old growth forests sexy again?
L low bar May 11, 2011
and while you are at it see if there are any puyallup tribal members who would like to pose as prisoners in a fort nisqually jail for summer fat camp kids. that should cover the engaging and interactive bits of keeping a parks and recreations program from going utterly terminal.

The Camp 6 Steam Train and Logging Museum will soon be gone but in its place the best is yet to come…
OPENING SUMMER 2012 AT POINT DEFIANCE PARK
The Downtown Tacoma LINK Train and Retail Shopping Museum!

good idea. perhaps this new link train can be powered by water and a piece of smoldering 2012 mayan calendar apocalypse asteroid. kind of a throwback.

I went there decades ago with the kids. Smart idea: sharp, metal objects and toddlers! According to METROPARKS Board, EVERYTHING has a 50 year life span (a direct quote). It’s how they justify the destruction of Titlow Pool. So, bye-bye choo-choo, bye-bye Pagoda (probably to be replaced by a Swedish interpretive center) and, soon, bye-bye rose gardens. Chinese Reconciliation Park on Ruston Way has 53 years left. It gets more because: a) Nobody can tell if it’s open yet, and b) nobody can tell how to get down there! But at least the yuppies have a place to walk their puppies!

COMING SOON TO POINT DEFIANCE PARK…
From the rubble of the former Camp 6 Logging Museum, Metro Parks is pleased to announce an exciting new exhibit:
JAY HEIGHTS CONDOMINUM MUSEUM*
*Pre-leasing rates start at $500.00 a year.
V Volcano Boycotting RR Anderson May 12, 2011
ha! Take that Rick Jones
D Daniel May 12, 2011
There’s a condo project that I didn’t report on? Someone get me the details fast! I can’t wait to smoke a cigar with the developer! No wonder my wallet felt lighter than it should.

With too-few exceptions, I agree with Jinxmedic. As someone asked, “What’s next?” Tacoma never seems to run out of feet to shoot itself in. Sadly, nothing in this town surprises me any more. For every struggle and occasional victory counted my those who love Tacoma, (new AND long-time residents), a score of other icons turn to dust and blow away. Shame on our so-called leaders. And shame on us.

@28 it’s called entropy. nothing is forever, except for sarah palin being in the news helping to speed up the process.
