Chihuly's "Laguna" Coming to MoG
Have you been thinking, “I wish there was a big Chihuly show coming to Tacoma. It’s been so long …” Well, fans of the one eyed master, your wait is over.
Dale Chihuly’s Laguna Murano Chandelier will be shown at the Museum of Glass starting September 18th. Chihuly created the large, 5-piece glass sculpture in 1996 in collaboration with Italian glass artists Lino Tagliapietra and Pino Signoretto. If you’ve been to the museum in the past several months, the main display has been a stunning collection of Lino Tagliapietra’s work. The 1,500 square-foot piece of stunning Chihulyness will be in MoG’s North Gallery until April 19, 2009.
This will be Chihuly’s first exhibition at the MoG since 2004’s Nijima Night Floats. Though the artist is not scheduled to appear, you can channel his spirit by wearing an eyepatch while viewing the chandelier.

Once upon a time, on an overcast day somewhere in Pioneer Square, sometime back in the late 90’s; a northwest artist and his fellow brotherhood artist comrades then known as the Mystic Sons of Morris Graves, sold one dollar raffle tickets around the local artist community. The grand prize? A small axe, a genuine chihuly peice, and the irreverent joy of hearing peices of sparkling broken maccia shatter to the ground. With no malice intended, the Mystic Sons artists’ statement went something like, “This is aimed at the media and Chihuly’s sycophants. Their circus takes away from more compelling art. The ubiquity of his commercial machine is comical.”
Ghad I long for the second coming of another revolution.
