City Council Meeting- Jan. 22, 2008
City Council had a light agenda tonight.
- January was proclaimed to be National Mentoring Month. A representative from Big Brothers, Big Sisters, thanked the Council for the recognition and raising awareness of the huge need for mentors.
- Goodwill gave a presentation on their Wheels to Work program. Last year the City donated 8 cars to help get the program off the ground and tonight 2 recipients spoke about how the vehicles changed their lives. The program is still accepting well functioning vehicles as donations.
- Resolution 37381 authorized more than $2 million for the continued work on the East 11th Street Hylebos Bridge. The design work is about 75% complete, and the bidding process is expected to start in May. Construction should start in August and be finished in 2010. The total cost is estimated at $22 million, with more than $15 million of that already secured from Federal and State sources.
- Resolution 37382 authorized a payment for the development of the Thea Foss Waterway 21st Street Park. The park is slated to be completed before Tall Ships 2008.
- Two ordinances were read for the first time to change language relating to funds being spent on the building that houses the Youth Marine Foundation. The building has more damage than previously thought and it will be cheaper to replace the building than to renovate it. The City’s contributions to the project were specifically earmarked for the renovation, but it has been recommended to change the wording to replacement.
And thats all folks. Short, sweet and to the point. Government at its best.
