City of Destiny Awards 2009 - Tonight

Tonight is the 23rd annual City of Destiny Awards. Since 1987, the City of Tacoma has honored approximately 200 outstanding volunteers through its City of Destiny Awards program. The Citizens Recognition Committee of individuals appointed by the City Council selects the winners.

If you don’t already have plans, tonight’s event is free and it’s generally a good time – or at least our friends seem to think so..

In addition to the recognition, all award winners will receive a colorful glass sculpture crafted by students in the Hilltop Artists in Residence Program.

Just in case you can’t make it, or you see someone you want to support, the City of Destiny honorees are:

  • Adult Leadership: Joseph Quilici for his work with the Mason Plaza in Proctor.

  • Youth Leadership: Anthony Wood for his work with Safe Streets and youth violence prevention.

  • Adult Sustained Service: Steph Farber for his years of service to downtown.

  • Youth Sustained Service: Ashley Finch for her work with the JROTC program at Mount Tacoma High School.

  • Neighborhood Group or Community Partnership: Pacific Avenue Business District for its work with Safe Streets to improve their neighborhood.

  • Corporation or Business: Read2Me for its work with childhood literacy.

  • Employee Group or Union Group: Tacoma Streets and Grounds Maintenance Division for its continued work in making our community livable.

  • Youth / Young Adult Group: Fort Nisqually Apprentice Interpreters for their dedication to bringing history to life for the community.

  • Environmental Sustainability: Change Starts Now, a vision from four Tacoma School of the Arts Students that is making a difference in younger students lives.
