CNN Money says Tacoma's Real Estate Is Tops
Since Tacoma’s internets seem to be all aflutter with our “most romantic city” designation, here’s another arbitrary list for you to consider: CNN Money’s list of the ten real estate markets projected to gain in value this year. Once again, Tacoma is being touted as the top market for a real estate comeback, with a forecasted gain of 11.8% by September 2012.
Tacoma is a mini-Seattle, situated right next door to the Washington capital. It’s an important port, a rail terminus and enjoys easy access to the mountains and Puget Sound.
I have never in my life described Tacoma as a mini-Seattle. Does that mean Seattle is a Super-Tacoma? And in that case, which comparison is more insulting? Ah, truly a question for the ages.
So we’ve heard this bounce-back talk before (here’s a nice list of examples).

Given how low the property values in Tacoma are, there certainly is a lot of upside. However, given the number of companies the city is losing, they may be off. Tacoma has a huge discount factor for real estate apparently because it is Tacoma.

I’m going to start calling Seattle “Super-Tacoma”.

I read the “mini-Seattle” and “next door to the Washington capital” as independent statements, since Tacoma is indeed next door to Oly, and as such I let it go. But you’re probably right, I think the writer f’ed it up.

you’re right. anytime derek finds something written by a genius to boost tacoma morale is a good thing. because brawndo has electrolytes. only now one wonders (well maybe not in the case of a tacoman homeowner who just got fluffed by a cnn writer) if anything the cnn source wrote holds electrolytes too…

Hey, people, lighten up. Calling Tacoma a mini-Seattle is meant as a compliment to the national audience of CNN Money. Whether we like it or not, Seattle is a pretty town, with excellent amenities and a great reputation (unlike T-town’s). So, if we get a bit of the halo effect from Seattle’s good image, why shouldn’t we appreciate that rather than bemoan it. I like living in Tacoma, but I also like occasionally visiting Seattle and Olympia.

well bob if that happens who’s online displays of repressed buzz town envy am i going to poke fun at? who gives a crap about homes? homes didn’t make seattle one of the coolest places to live in the 90’s, the buzz did. but some bees buzz better than others i guess, and perhaps a halo is just too big of a flower not to want to spend all your time and money on. but my money is still on t-town if it can pull off what austin texas is doing right now. i don’t think it’ll happen but you never know. all it took for austin was one clever low budget film, a radio station, a few good bands and a bumpersticker slogan: keep austin weird. maybe all that tacoma needs is a good bumpersticker. like: no, seriously, i choose to live here. personally i like: deodorize tacoma. but that would get ride of the mills and refineries that help cnn writers put shit in their articles when they know zero about what they are writing about.

how about:
“Tacoma – you’ll get used to it.”

Just ran into a prospective renter. She told me “it’s a renter’s market because everyone is buying houses now that they are affordable”
I know that a poll of 1 is statistically insignificant but this is anectodal evidence that is best not ignored. If it is really happening, we’ll see it in the statistics 3 months from now.
Buy now.
