Community Gardens in Tacoma - An Update

A few weeks back we talked about community gardens in Tacoma.  After that posting, we heard from many of you that you want to see the existing gardens reinvigorated, new gardens created, or simply a place for you to plant your own food.  It is clear that the demand exists for more gardens all over the city.  The question of how we get from where we are today to where we want to be still needs to be answered.

We’re not looking to recreate from scratch something that already exists today in Tacoma.  And there’s a tremendous knowledge base and history available to build on.  We’re looking to channel new energy into the current system and create gardens and processes where the community identifies gaps.  Many of you have already been invited to help.

There will be a public meeting in April where we’ll discuss the existing community garden assets in Tacoma, the process of creating gardens, our goals as a community, and what we need to succeed.  The meeting will include a panel of community garden experts from all over the region.

The energy to create gardens comes from the community and not from any central organization.  It’s not about land or money.  It’s about people.  It is YOU that will make this a success.

If you’re interested in helping or staying informed, please contact me.

I hope people realize that the Karpeles museum is incredible as a community asset. This is a good excuse to go there if you have never been to it.
