Craig Ueland Resigns from Russell
The News Tribune is reporting that Russell Investments CEO Craig Ueland has resigned. The Interim CEO is Nortwestern Mutual VP John Schlifske.
Given the rumblings we’ve been hearing about how Russell’s potential departure from Tacoma was all about Ueland, we’re curious what our chances are now. The game may be changing …

This tactic is an amusing twist. What next? Public Relations Office memos from Northwestern Mutual implying that Ueland was disloyal to corporate goals?

I actually heard about this from the TNT. First time in awhile I didn’t see it on Exit 133 first.

Yeah I dont get whats being implied here either – from what I can remember from the trib when the story about Russell first broke out, they made it seem like Ueland wanted to stay in Tacoma but he recognized that the math just didn’t seem to pencil out – this blurb on the other hand makes it seem like he’s the ultimate culprit? Anyone confused as I am?

I was under the impression that he had been the one originally wanting to relocate.

Where does he live?

Ueland is originally from Bellevue and wanted to move closer to home, family, and friends.

Where does he live?
He now lives in Burien

From articles posted online, I’ve gathered that Craig Ueland is a Bellevue native, with a BS from Stanford and an MBA from UW. He started with Russell in ’83 and has worked in multiple locations around the world, including Australia and London. According to campaignmoney.com, he currently resides in Burien.
It appears that Craig has been a highly valuable player for Russell since 1983. As their growth has been good for Tacoma, I’d like to thank Craig for his part in Russell’s success and wish him well in his future endeavors. Also, I hope that whether he moves on to another company or starts his own, he will consider Tacoma a good place to do business.

It will be interesting to see how or if this story plays out. When a CEO resigns “effective immediately” for no apparent reason, there has GOT to be a back story.

Squid – My thoughts exactly. Transition is never supposed to take people by surprise and based on the stories in the TNT most of the people at Russell were surprised yesterday.
I think it’s good news for Tacoma. An interesting parallel in my opinion is Northwest Mutual’s decision to commit to Milwaukee rather than move 90 miles south to Chicago. They have clearly decided that the benefits of moving a short distance to a world class neighboring city are not worth it for them, wonder if they believe the same thing about Tacoma and Seattle.

I second Dan’s comments. I expect we will eventually hear that the Board asked for his resignation. Northwestern Mutual is an outstanding company that has been very loyal to its hometown and has had great success. This is precisely why George Russell picked them and he certainly had the pick of the litter. I would not be surprised that the Board said enough, about the idea of leaving your home. We shall see. Remember the old saying, “ You dance with the one that brought you.” Boy, I am really dating myself!
