UPS Weyerhauser Hall Grand Opening

This Friday The University of Puget Sound will celebrate the grand opening of the William T. and Gail Weyerhaeuser Center for Health Sciences. The sparkling new LEED Silver Certified building will be the long-awaited new home to the University’s Occupational and Physical Therapy programs, along with other health sciences-related courses. The health sciences career field is forecast to grow in coming years, and this building will give the University the space to accomodate that growth – in style.

For more on the building and the grand opening and dedication, see the UPS website or read the Daily Index article.

UWT Community Gardens/Interdisciplinarity and Sustainability Series

This week’s University of Washington, Tacoma Interdisciplinarity and Sustainability talk will feature Tacoma/Pierce County Community Garden Coordinator Kristen McIvor addressing the topic of “Community gardens: effects on nutrient cycling, diabetes and democracy (among other things).” Kristin is very knowledgeable, and the topic sounds like a good one. Be ware, though, if you’re considering a community garden plot of your own – this might just give you the nudge you need to take that plunge.

This lecture series is free and open to the public. More information is available from the UWT website.

Hilltop Artists Studio Tour – Art at Work

Here’s something to put on your calendar: Saturday, November 5th Hilltop Artists in Residence will be offering a studio tour as part of the kick-off weekend of Tacoma’s Art at Work Month. The Hilltop Artists is a fantastic program doing great work in the community, so if you don’t know them, you should. And of course watching glass work is always a little mesmerizing, so we think this is one event you shouldn’t miss.

Find studio tour details, and learn more about the Hilltop Artists in Residence program on their website. And keep an eye open for other Art at Work events throughout November.

Celebrity Cakes Moves, Introduces “Cake Mobile”

The News Tribune reports that Tacoma’s Celebrity Cakes is moving from its home in Freighthouse Square by the end of the year. Don’t worry, though, they aren’t going far: just around the corner to East 26th and D. And they’re introducing a “Cake Mobile” – you know, like an ice cream truck, but for cake. Awesome. The Cake Mobile will make appearances at events around town, and even has a brand new Facebook page, so be sure to check them out there. Read more from The News Tribune.
