Davita Close to a Decision?
The News Tribune is reporting that Davita is close to a decision on the future of their downtown Tacoma offices. The two options still on the table appear to be the old Sauro’s Cleanarama site and another one on South Hill, Puyallup.
Which one would you choose?

From the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, Davita
Don’t cry for me ole Tacoma
The truth is I never left you
All through my wild days
My mad existence
I kept my promise
Don’t keep your distance

Hopefully they’ll stick around! Sometimes I think employers underestimate the impact of their location on their own employees.
Locating in the suburbs may be cheaper, but what effect would it have on the workforce? It’s harder to get to work, takes longer, and adds stress. I wonder how much $$ you would lose having less productive employees vs. a more expensive lease.

I liked Total Renal Care better. Just call it what it is. Davita sounds like an Iron Butterfly song.

And if you want to locate in a suburb, why pick South Hill of all places? That place makes Federal Way look like San Francisco.
Maybe it’s just a bargaining chip…

remember the $80 million permit with Davita’s name on it that the city claimed was “just playing with numbers”?
Financials may find themselves not as powerful or as needed as in previous years. With the 75 million aging baby boomers, health care is going to be the real next big thing, not banks. They have to heal themselves before they can even think about earning our trust again.
I think Davita will stay in downtown and build up… makes more sense and I get the vibe that they like being here. After all, dialysis doesn’t exactly have the same level of ego that goes with “international financial services” type companies… in health care you actually have to have some compassion and empathy.

South Hill is a suburban nightmare. It sucks. No culture. Why would an organization like Davita want to be smack dab in the middle of that wasteland of chain stores, franchise restaurants, and the like that could literally be “any-town USA”.
They’d better hope that if they move there, they don’t end up like the town they’ve picked: with the lack of personality and creativity that South Hill is.
Ahhh… it’s been a long day

Basically, I vote for… somewhere off Exit 133.

So long as Davita is not looking for any government handout I’m happy if they want to stay here in Tacoma. If they want to play the same game as the Russell people I’ll be happy to show them the door. I know that Davita is in the kidney dialysis business but I think the people of Tacoma are tired of being pissed on.

There’s enough open space downtown to build a replica of the South Hill campus.

Russell can build thier new giant HQ on the Sauro site and Davita can have the old Russell digs. Solved.

It is kind of sad when the best Tacoma can offer Davita or Russell is a toxic waste dump.

It’s kinda sad when all Tacoma and Ruston can offer the yuppies is a SuperFund cleanup site laden with arsenic.

South Hill? I know there are a lot of young families, it’s a growing area population-wise, and has fairly easy access to Seattle up Hwy. 167—but the Meridian/South Hill corridor single-handedly has the worst traffic in Pierce County.
I’ve been stuck there at rush hour where it takes 30 minutes to go 5 blocks.
South Hill is a poster child for why good transportation planning is essential in areas of growth.

Hello Thorax O’Tool,
Which site are you referring to when you state “SuperFund cleanup site laden with arsenic” Interested to hear your opinion….
:)

what’s sad is two major employers contemplating jumping ship in the midst of an “urban revival”.
can’t necessarily fault Russell (though i’d hate to see them go)… takes money to make money, and if seattle is going to bring it in for them, well, maybe it’s a smart business decision.
but davita? south hill? ugh.
T TacomAroma February 23, 2009
Davita should stick with Tacoma…South Hill is going to look like a 3rd world slum ten years from now.

“Hello Thorax O’Tool,

The former ASARCO site, now known as Point Ruston.
And TA@ 16:
Could be sooner than 10 years if gas goes back up to $5/gal anytime soon.
S Squid February 24, 2009
TA@16: a third world slum in 10 years? I don’t see a realistic improvement plan on the table that would bring SH up to that standard in such a short period.
