DaVita Moving Employees to Federal Way
We read what appears to be another piece of bad news for Tacoma in the TNT yesterday: DaVita will be moving about 350 of its employees from its downtown Tacoma offices to Federal Way by next April.
The healthcare company was looking for more office space to accomodate the increased number of employees that have come with its recent growth. According to the TNT, DaVita looked at office space in Tacoma, but didn’t find space that was large enough and appropriate to its needs, without scattering offices around downtown.
The company found the space it was looking for at a much cheaper rate in a building on the Weyerhauser campus in Federal Way where a high vacancy rate has driven down the cost of office space.
Apparently Tacoma offered incentives to DaVita, including concessions on the B&O tax, which the company has made clear it finds objectionable. In the end, however, it wasn’t enough to persuade DaVita in light of the significant savings on rent.
550 DaVita employees will remain in its Pacific Avenue building in Tacoma, and the company hopes to continue to grow its operations in both locations.
You win some, you lose … nevermind.

Like rats off a sinking ship…
Some things must be seriously wrong in the Tacoma business environment for all these big moves out of Tacoma.

It’s time to abolish the B&O tax in Tacoma. The city can easily adjust to a reduction of $40,000,000 per year in revenue when all the businesses located in Bellevue, Seattle and Fife flock to Tacoma once this tax no longer exists.

Everyone hears about the big guys but I’ve seen a good number of small business, 3-10 person shops, leave my building downtown. Parking is too expensive. Free or cheaper off street parking would help. Ms. Mayor, break down these parking gates!
