Delays for Old Town Dock Project

It looks like it will be a little longer than we had hoped before we see a rebuilt Old Town Dock.  Apparently the $2 million Old Town Dock project will need to undergo a ‘formal consultation’ regarding compliance with Federal environmental regulations, according to the National Marine Fisheries Service.  We haven’t heard much in the way of details yet, but Public Works is looking in to the reason for the determination.  What we do know, according to last week’s City Manager report to the Council, is that “it will likely mean that the project will now become a 2013 project rather than a 2012 project,” and that more of the budget will have to go towards the regulatory and permit process.

So, it’ll be a little longer before we can enjoy the view from the end of the Old Town Dock.  Back in October they were talking about replacing the public restrooms there as part of this project … will that still happen?

Squid was more right than we guessed…

is it a prerequisite for all projects in this city to be delayed?

That does seem to be a theme that anyone who pays attention to Tacoma infrastructure projects will be familiar with. In fairness it can be tough in old cities, never knowing what you’ll hit when you start digging (how many forgotten oil tanks are out there?), but I think their schedules in many instances have been overly optimistic. That however is not the case here. It is the regulators that have held this up, which seems bit silly since a dock allready exists on the site and the environment will in theory be improved by the removal of cresote pilings.
