Dorky's Opening on Saturday
Every day, I drive down 9th on my way to work. Every day, I see the signs in the window on the north side of 9th and Pacific taunting me… “Dorky’s – Coming Soon!”
The wait will be over on Saturday. Twenty minutes ago, Dorky’s Facebook page bore the welcome news that they will be opening on Saturday, September 18 at 10:00am. There will be no food or beer yet, but pre-packaged snack foods and bottled soft beverages will be available. The main attraction – the arcade games – will be ready for very deadly serious gaming.
Dorky’s pinball games (for now) include Evel Knievel, Cyclone, Tee’d Off, South Park, Dirty Harry, Space Riders, Supersonic – and possibly – Whitewater. The arcade game lineup is just as healthy and varied: Karate Champ, Operation Wolf, Pole Position, Arkanoid, Crown’s Golf, Revolution X, Star Wars, Asteroids, Galaga, Dig Dug and Spy Hunter.
I’m so glad I saved that jar full of quarters…

I hope the Star Wars machine is the sit-down version. It allows me to shut off the harsh light of the real world and more fully realize my space hero fantasies. So many quarters dumped into that as a kid. So many.

Rusty Griswold: Hey, ya’ got Pac Man?
Cousin Dale: No.
Rusty Griswold: Ya’ got Space Invaders?
Cousin Dale: Nope.
Rusty Griswold: Ya’ got Asteroids?
Cousin Dale: Naw, but my dad does. Can’t even sit on the toilet some days

If you dig Spy Hunter, you will also love Crazy Taxi. I hope they get that.

while i’m super excited to see an arcade open in tacoma, i’m saddened to see it’s like many other hip food businesses here: a bar.
it’s great if you’re 20-30. if you’re not, it’s not so great. and if you have really cool teenagers, like i do, it doubly sux.
washington’s liquor laws are ridiculous and families with older kids can’t support the businesses they’d like most of the time if liquor is served. are we saying there’s no way to make money as a food establishment if you can’t make it 21-up? or are we saying it’s too hard to have two service areas?
tacoma will grow into the city it could be if we could get broaden from the very important 20-30 year old demographic to others. you’d be surprised…see portland, san franciscom, oakland, chicago. hipster businesses with all kinds of people. more $$, more disposable income, more revenue…

Visited Saturday and dropped a few dollars in various machines… I was thrilled to get behind the wheel of Spy Hunter again!
The place is pretty barren as several of the pinballs are out of order and the food service is yet-to-come (as mentioned in the original post). Feels like they opened prematurely?
