Downtown Tacoma Post Office is Sold

Downtown Tacoma’s historic post office at 11th and A Streets is sold. According to The News Tribune, Centralia developer George Heidgerken and Federal Way businessman Patrick Rhodes purchased the building for $1.375 million – half the asking price.

If had known it would be that cheap … ah nevermind.

This Post Office was at one time being seriously considered as the new home for Northwest Territorial Mint, who really, really wanted to relocate to Tacoma. Instead, they moved all manufacturing to Nevada, which ultimately was much more business-friendly than Washington.

Nice to see someone who seems to appreciate the history and doesn’t want to strip it of it’s character.

I wonder what they plan to do with the courtrooms. He mentions those as being offices, so I’m guessing they would strip those rooms of their features to create office space. Does anyone know if the interior of the courtrooms is modern, since they were used up until 1992? Maybe the look is not very historic but more modern in those rooms.

I hope the developers keep to their word and preserve what they can of the interior.

That place would have been a glorious law school for UWT… and at $1.375 mil? Geez, I hope it is adored by the new owners and it’s charm and history respected as it’s one of my favorite buildings downtown.

one of my favorite downtown buildings. the fact it was open to the public and I frequently used it to mail uh.. art things… anyway it is a damn tragedy. Please tell me it has historical protection.

I should read the TNT article before commenting. What a deal!

    “Heidgerken, 69, is an opportunist.”
“[His] first foray into downtown property ownership. He said that he mostly owns sites with industrial development possibility…”

Interesting description. Doesn’t talk much about his industrial development. I think it’s a good thing that he owns the Olympia Brewery – another artifact – but I don’t know how that building’s preservation or operations has been managed.

I am happy to learn that I can still lick stamps…and I guess I’ll keep my PO box down there….I’m nostalgic that way….

I sure would like to know if the developer are wanting to use the post office as a stamp collector museum I know that thrusday once a month the stamp club meets and Boeing has a stamp club Also I know that Mr. Weyerhouser was learning about stamps and many more!

I just hope they make sure there is still a postal office in the building or more life is going to drain out of downtown Tacoma.

Cities usually fight very hard to keep a post office in the heart of the business district. Tacoma should too.

“Post office spokesman Ernie Swanson said the postal service was happy to have sold the building. The post office retail store will remain, so people still can buy stamps or have mail delivered there. The agency plans to move its carriers to another location, he said.”

We’ll still be able to mail out our tax returns and checks to the IRS on 4/15 at the post office downtown.

i think the best thing they can do in this town is turn it into a bar.
