Raise A Pint for Public Radio Starts Today
It’s not even 8:00 on Monday morning and we’re still talking about beer …
Doyle’s, the other Tacoma based best bar in America, is beginning their Spring fundraiser for public radio today. From today through April 2nd, every Guinness and Beemish sold will result in a dollar going to public radio. As you may recall, they’ve done this before for KUOW. This year, they’re including KPLU in the mix. From Russ:
After the brow beating we received during last fall’s Raise A Pint promotion we have included KPLU. In a twist you will be able to choose your favorite station by choosing your Irish stout. KPLU will be represented by Beamish and KUOW by Guinness. We encourage you to exercise your 15th amendment early and often.

KUOW has given much more attention to Tacoma in the past year, mostly on the positive side. KPLU has been acting like those Tacomans who tell people they’re from Seattle. I’ll have a Guinness.

Hmmm…I like Guinness better but I worked at KPLU…

I’m all about KPLU. Nothing against KUOW but KPLU is THE definative jazz station up here.
I’ve never had Beamish but I’m confident that I can acquire a taste for it after 50 or so pints.

KPLU’s over-commercialized jazz programming sorta blows (if I hear one more jazzy Beatles cover I’m going to club this here baby seal), and Bryan nails it with the Tacoma-denier vibe.
KUOW and KXOT rock some awesome programming, so it’s Guinness for me.
(But I’ll probably donate cash-money to both…in the fall, try as they will to trick me into donating twice a year.)

I’m with Jamie and Bryan — KUOW/KXOT have better programming than KPLU, and seem care more about the region as a whole, including Tacoma. KUOW has even featured Exit 133 on air. For jazz, I prefer KBCS (91.3) to KPLU, though their jazz programming is more limited than KPLU’s and reception down here is a little spotty.

KBCS rocks. The only reason I can think of off the top of my head that I miss living in Kent.

I just flipped to 91.3 and got a lot of static and what sounded like country. Should I try tuning in while in Kent?

KBCS is out of Bellevue, so the closer to there the better. They aren’t all jazz, though, there’s some folk and world music stuff in there too….

KBCS is the station that I listen to if I can get it. reception sucks down here. if i have to hear one more jazz instrumental of “smoke gets in your eyes” or something like that on KPLU, i too will club a seal pup.
i donate to KBCS for music (including jazz) and KUOW for news and content (oh, and the Swing Years). KPLU – beh. who cares.
maybe they should give a buck to KBCS for anyone who orders a Ruination Ale 22. Yum!

I find Tom Waits comments ironic. I just heard “Walkin’ in the Rain” by you yesterday on KPLU. I also heard the one you wrote/sang/played about going into a diner just to be with the crowd and had some time to kill or something.
So you get airplay on the station but you say you don’t like it because they played a song you didn’t like?
I hope they keep playing your music because I’m too cheap to go out and buy any of your used CDs at Buzzards.
Not surprised you’re interested in the alcohol aspect of this fundraiser.

Speaking of alchohol and fundraisers, if you give blood this Friday at Paddy Coyne’s, you get a coupon for a free pint.
Granted, it’s not traditional fundraiser, but still worth mentioning.
