Dreams of Tacoma - Let's Visualize It
What are your dreams for a future Tacoma? The local AIA chapter is sponsoring series of discussions during the month of April to help develop a few dreams. The goal of the series is to generate new design ideas for our city. Jon Denton from McGranahan Architects, and the event organizer, described how each night would work like this:
Participants place ideas/topic in a hat. We’d pull a random idea/topic out of the hat and develop it in a mini charette fashion.
Imagine, for example, how could the design of the waterfront allow for greater use than people walking their dogs Or how could building x go about a face lift? Any topic is acceptable as long as it pertains to design and Tacoma. No idea is too large or too small.
When and Where
Each discussion will take place at the Tacoma Public Library downtown branch.
Wednesday, April 4th at 7:00 pm, Upstairs exhibit space
Wednesday, April 11th at 7:00 pm, Upstairs exhibit space
Tuesday, April 17th at 7:00 pm, Conference room
Wednesday, April 25th at 7:00 pm, Conference room
What are your dreams? All are welcome. Join the discussion.

Wow! Thanks for the informative and well written article. Having lived in Tacoma most of my life, I’ve taken advantage of nearly all it has to offer—with the exception of a Rainiers/Twins/Yankees/Tugs/Tigers game. Maybe next year…

Sigh I’ve been going to ball games at this park my entire life. I really love it and I hope this park gets the renovations it needs (and stays put).

I think baseball is in Tacoma to stay, unlike experiments such as the Stars or the Sabercats. The new owners seem to be doing quite a bit to make the Rainiers an attractive option. I think the area around the stadium really needs to be made into an urban village to reduce the stadium’s isolation, and give fans before and after game options. Right now all they have is to get in there cars and go home. There needs to be more.

I hope that the Rainiers stay put, but I don’t think that making some kind of weird suburban village out of the somewhat remote high school/Cheney/Metroparks property is a good idea. Downtown is half-empty, so how much effort should the city really be putting into a project of that sort? What’s the real upside beyond increased gate revenues for Schlegel SG?
I’m not really crazy about the owners’ other plans, like the use of a good chunk of the rehab grant money on a Chunky’s Pizza™ Superstarr Video Blast scoreboard or a Rhubarb Xtreme Double Mega Platinum Fun Club seating section, but I’m sure they know their business. Just the nature of modern sports, I guess.

Personally, I enjoy being at a ballgame without the intrusion of a Jumbo-tron replaying every move and telling me when to cheer. Give me a bag of peanuts, hotdog, and a couple of cold adult beverages to go with my ballgame and I’m pretty happy.
Now the wife, that’s different. She is ok for a couple innings, but then would like to have the opportunity to nip into Victoria’s Secret for a bit. Such is life.
