Economic Development Community Meeting on June 24th

If you recall, the City of Tacoma partnered with AngelouEconomics to develop an Economic Development Strategy for downtown Tacoma.

On June 24th, the City of Tacoma will host a community meeting regarding the strategy from 5:30 to 7:00 pm at Freighthouse Square.

The meeting will be your chance to learn about the consultant’s recommendations. Staff from the City of Tacoma and AngelouEconomics will be available to address any questions that may arise from the presentation.

In addition, the City has hired VIA Architects to update the City’s downtown plan for long-range planning and zoning. The VIA recommendations will be aligned with the Economic Development Strategy. Representatives from VIA will also be present on June 24 with an overview of the downtown plan update process and solicit feedback on conceptual plan elements. Additional community meetings will be held this summer and fall as the recommendations from VIA Architects evolve.

Okay okay okay, why did the city once again hire a consulting firm from outside the city (VIA’s offices are in Seattle and Vancouver BC) for this study? I thought it was enough, already, when the Scandinavian Frank Lloyd Wright was imported recently to add his two kronor worth regarding Tollefson Plaza et al. For that matter, Angelou Economics is based in Austin. I also thought that the City was supposed to give local businesses consideration when hiring for city projects. It just proves once again that local B&O tax dollars are perfectly acceptable to collect, but local firms are not knowledgable or skilled enough to hire. Retaining local talent doesn’t mean you’re provincial, it just means you know how to recognize the worthiness of those in your own backyard.
