Eight Names Move Forward in City Council Appointment Process
The Tacoma City Council held an executive session today to discuss the qualifications of the 40+ applicants for the two open Council seats. The meeting ended at 12:07 pm and, after a 5 minute break, eight candidates were named as moving forward to the interview phase.
The eight candidates for the two seats are, in the order announced:

The interviews will be conducted on Tuesday, January 12th, 2010. There will be three general questions provided to the candidates in advance.
Councilmember Campbell closed his comments with a word of advice for those still in the race, “Put your best foot forward. Impress us!”

$20 says they go w/Mello and Lecy-Davis. Ryan’s got the votes locked up and even though Talbert thinks he’s got the votes, our new council will be scared off by the TNT’s impending anti-Talbert appointment op-ed and will use the diversity cover to appoint Patricia.
Not a bad thing, since most of these candidates are stellar.

Personally, I’m rooting for Koree Baker for one of the positions, but I feel that any of the other candidates could be great.

I believe all comments are very good ones that have been written so far but I challenge everyone to think about what is most important. What will create a better Tacoma for all of us? Is it another monument, more tourists, another event, or we gave our part promotion that will help do the trick. I believe we need more small business advocacy at City and State level, a stronger local economy (defending and promoting work within), incentives for small business startups and incubators, small business incentives, and Local jobs is a start (considering over 90% of employers in Washington are Small Business owners. In addition we need to create a better awareness to Tacomanites that buying Local is an essential part for our survival, not only as a Country, but also in our own city. Do you realize that every dollar spent locally keeps .68 cent in our community? Also if we continue the trend and allow farmers to lose their land and the concrete truck to rule we will outsource all produce. If there is a very large disaster and we rely on other countries for our food what then? Prisoners are what we are. We need local businesses, local farmers, and local independence. I think any and all city council members should be people that get that Local is the future and Future needs to begin. GO Patricia…..

Mello and Boe were mentioned before the elections as replacements. And Tacoma’s city officials are known for not making waves or surprising anyone. Trish won’t get it even though she’s liked by everyone- she doesn’t have the political creditials.

Why doesn’t Ryan Mello make reference to his stint on MetroParks?
Is he not proud of the impending buldozing of Tilow Pool and replacing it with a splash and dash to be crammed into Kandle Park?? One comment he supported: It’s outlived it’s 50 years. Really, Ryan?? Time to bulldoze Stadium High, Old City Hall and the Wayerhouser Mansion. Put the wrecking ball to the National Guard Armory and the Old Narrows Bridge. He’s another head nodder. Everyone else nods yes, so he will too. Like a toy chiahuahua on a Chevy dashboard. NO THANKS.
Where is Harold Moss’ name? Talk about experience and ability to work with people.
The whole process has been a sham with it’s behind closed doors, ILLEGAL meetings and decisions. We need someone with the $$$ and cojones to sue and make them obey the LAW.

The loss of the Titlow Pool will be huge. I’m not sure why so much effort is being put into taking it down. Generations of Tacomans have enjoyed this pool and I don’t see why it can’t be replaced with one easier on the environment but in the same location. The pool is part of Tacoma’s heritage, more should be done to preserve it.

Titlow pool is being “bulldozed” to allow for an important salmon restoration project in the adjacent tidal lagoon (which can be great juvenile salmon habitat). There are lots of places you can have swimming pools, but salmon habitat is where it is. I’m glad Mello appears to recognize that.

Good point about the salmon habitat. Many things are part of Tacoma’s heritage. Salmon spawning in our streams and lagoons are a more important heritage than the kiddies swimming in a man made structure that we can easily place elsewhere.
Plus Titlow isn’t the most accessible place anyway. The pool needs to go somewhere where the kids can ride their bikes, walk, or that taking the bus is a viable option.
