Election Day 2012 - Open Thread

There’s absolutely no way you don’t know this already, but we’re going to say it anyway: today is Election Day.

That means that one way or another, the political ads will cease (soon to be replaced by holiday sale ads), and we should know in short order who will be president this time next year, who will fill a number of local and regional positions, and whether same-sex marriage and marijuana will be legalized, along with many other less hotly debated issues.

So, for those of you who have yet to cast your ballots, here are a few helpful tips:

  • Your ballot has to be postmarked no later than today to be counted. That said, elections officials are encouraging voters to drop their ballots at dropboxes today to be sure they’re counted.

  • Drop boxes and voting centers close at 8:00 p.m. on TODAY.

Ballot dropbox locations in Tacoma:

  • Kandle Park Police Substation, 5140 N. 26th St.;

  •
  • 72nd Street Transit Center, 1319 E. 72nd St.;

  •
  • Pierce County Annex, 2401 S. 35th St.;

  •
  • Pierce County Community Connections, 3611 S. D St.;

  •
  • Tacoma Area Coalition for Individuals with Disabilities (TACID), 6315 S. 19th St.;

  •
  • Tacoma Dome Park & Ride, 610 Puyallup Ave.;

  •
  • County-City Building, 930 Tacoma Ave. S.; NE Police Substation, 4731 Norpoint Way

We’ll be keeping an eye on the returns, and we’d love to hear about your experiences voting, and your reactions as the results start to roll in.

Is there anything you’d like to say before we know the results later this evening?

    You can still vote for Robert Jesse Hill for the position of Pierce County Sheriff as a write in candidate even though he is incarcerated in Pierce County Jail.
    Don’t vote for the boring unopposed candidates.

    Hey. Remember our GLBT friends and vote for true love and marriage equality by supporting Ref 74. Voting for Ref 74 is voting on the right side of history.

    Tacoma voted for Proposition 1 in 2011 by 56%. I anticipate with the higher turnout that that number will be higher, maybe 60%.

    I’ll be watching returns and be ready to run calculations by tonight. Watch for Prop 1 getting to roughly 83,000 yes votes by the end of tonight. If we get there, I can sleep a little more soundly.

    If you haven’t already voted, please do! APPROVE Prop 1.
